Thanks for adding absolutely nothing! I appreciate your concern (seriously, I do) but this thread is not for this kind of “encouragement.”
I’m sorry, it did seem a bit ad hominem to me after I posted it, and based more on an emotional reaction than logical argument. Not necessarily an emotional reaction to the Pope argument, but to the effect that Jesus did not give binding authority to his apostles.
If there is no binding authority, how do we know that anything that they(early church and apostles) said is true, since ultimately we are depending on men, and men make mistakes and have prejudices? (like I do).
And if the men following Jesus didn’t have any assurance what they were learning was what Jesus taught, how could we? We could make up things or get them wrong just as well as them.
I could see the point of a council of bishops having the authority to infallibly bind. But then a majority would probably be a majority for this. If this were true then, the church should be Arian.
So you hit me in the gut, so to speak, with the argument that the church has a certain lack of authority. This authority of the Church is what led me back to the CC. Otherwise all arguments are relatively nonsensical, and I would really have no idea of where to go or of what is really correct.
I usually read these posts because I believe they are based on teachings of the CC. Thus I know I have a sure foundation. If Jesus did not give them authority, there is only a quagmire, and in fact, I couldn’t even be sure of what Jesus taught to begin with. I wouldn’t have to try to make the different gospels and epistles jibe. I could just assume that each apostle had his own view and so could I. After all, what authority did they have to bind MY conscience?
I would be left in murkiness, and I need clarity.
peace
