Can anyone please recommend a good book or two dealing with the lives of saints? Something not to scholarly but with a little historical perspective?

Are you looking more for a book that has very brief descriptions of many saints, or something that has more in depth looks at fewer saints?

Pretty much all are based on Butler’s Lives of the Saints, but are more affordable. I cruise the thrift stores. Have found a nice, coffee table sized book entitled “One Hundred Saints.” Later, I found two versions of a condensed Butler’s, one titled “Lives of the Saints” , the other “Lives of Saints” and both copyrighted in the 1950s. One gives a daily reflection on a Saint, the other more detail. A copy of John J. Delaney’s Dictionary of Saints, which encapsulates over 5,000 Saints also turned up. Once you know a Saint’s name, you can then do further research.

If your looking for something more in depth, I highly recommend the Story of a Soul.

I quite agree with awesomecatholic.

I would also suggest “Saint Anthony of Padua, the Miracle-Worker (1195-1231)” by C.M. Antony.

St. Anthony is loved by many, myself included. The author strips away the legends to reveal the true Anthony as seen by his contemporaries. The de-mythologized Anthony shines as the great saint he is. FYI: The book has an imprimatur.
