Book recommendation fiction

I like stories such as the sound of music and the Thorn Birds. Stories that span across generations with a bit of misterie. Lately, any book I have took of out of the library has had so much sexuality in it, I don’t bother finishing the book.

Does anyone have any books they can recommend?

Hmm, let me see… 🙂

Roots by Alex Haley spans six generations of the descendants of a slave who was taken from The Gambia to the US. Some bits of it are hard reading, but it’s a very heartwarming story overall.

The Brothers Karamazov by Feodor Doestoyevsky is hard to summarize, and is heavy going in places, but it’s also a great story chock-full of Christian paradoxes and dilemmas.

If I can think of others, I’ll post them a bit later. 😉

All of the Michael D. O’Brien fiction books are great.

Here’s a couple of suggestions.

If you are looking for a relational story I would begin with the novel, Strangers And Sojourners (here). I came across my wife reading this one day and she was crying reading it (the book was that emotionally moving).

Another great option would be A Cry of Stone (here).

Did they make a movie of this in the late 80s with Oprah?
 
If you’re into science fiction at all then I’d recommend the Ender Series by Orson Scott Card. The entire series spans about 2000 years and it literally has no sexuality in it. Well…maybe a very small amount but nothing inappropriate.

It’s one of my favourite book of all time and they’ve begun to make it into a movie series.
 
If we’re going into SF, AdamPeter, I’d also recommend the original Foundation Trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation) by Isaac Asimov. Fantastic concepts and storytelling, and absolutely no offensive material. 👍

Ignore the later ones unless you’re a completist, though - they’re both less well written and have some problematic stuff. 🙂
 
I would recommend the book “All Creatures Great and Small” and the sequels by James Herriot. My wife recommends “Christy” by Catherine Marshall.

GWTW is the easiest 1500 pages you’ll ever read. I’d seen the movie dozens of times when I finally read the book. I think I got through it in less than a week, which I’m seldom able to do anymore.

Great suggestions.
I just finished O’Brien’s The Island of the World.
I put off reading it because it’s so long, 850 pages, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s the story of one man’s life, his trials and struggles, and how he eventually returns to God. It’s engrossing and beautifully written.

OH YES!!!

I loved the entire series–“All Creatures Great and Small”, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, “All Things Wise and Wonderful” and “The Lord God Made Them All”! I started reading excerpts of them in Reader’s Digest back in the '70s (I was about 10 years old) and read the entire series when I was 13.

Have to go back and re-read them! Thanks for the memory!
 
Well obviously the suggestions are good ! I went online and a lot of them were checked out with a hold on ie there is already someone who is waiting to check it out once it is brought back

Sadly, a lot of the books or authors aren’t available at my library:( so unless they are made into a movie, I can not request the library buy it

Those are great books! I remember enjoying them as a boy. 🙂
 
OP, I don’t know a lot of inter-generational fiction to suggest, but some of my favorites cover the sweep of a lifetime.

Look up the books of Taylor Caldwell, who wrote historical fiction. I bet there are some that are just what you are looking for. I really liked Dear and Glorious Physician, about St. Luke. She also wrote Great Lion of God (historical fiction about St. Paul) and I, Judas (about Judas Iscariot), but I haven’t read either of those.

I’d also suggest My Ántonia, Death Comes for the Archbishop, and other books by Willa Cather. She was a wonderful author.

On Roots, it was made into a mini-series for TV but never a movie with Oprah. You might be thinking about The Colour Purple. 😉

*Roots *was the mini-series with LaVar Burton (ten years before Star Trek). Our library has both the book and the 30th anniversary edition DVD of the mini-series. Hmmm…maybe I’ll check those out. The last time I watched Roots was in its first real-time run in 1977, and I was too young to really appreciate it.
