Hello All,

I will be visiting my daughter over the holidays and would like to recommend to her a good book to read. To put what I am looking for into perspective I’ll provide a little background.

I have recommended books in the past. Scott Hahn’s Rome Sweet Home went over fairly well but was, at least the time, over her head theologically. I’ve recommended some others as well that are probably considered more apologetics based. I think she made an attempt at reading them but fairly quickly lost interest.

The last book I recommended was “My Sisters the Saints” by Colleen Carroll Campbell. I think she really enjoyed this book.

So it appears that for a book to capture her heart it should be more of a real story, perhaps more modern, and have deep moral themes throughtout that illustrate how these deep moral Catholic themes provided joy.

A tough request I know. I am not even sure if there is another book that may be compared to Campbell’s wonderfull book. By the way I strongly recommened it. I read it before I passed it on to my daughter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried giving her a book on saints? their accounts of life?

There’s one called I think its secrets of a soul, based of the life of st. therese of lisieux

a biography on padre pio got me reading too.

I think having her read on the lives of young saints will help her.

What is the goal? Does she need to strengthen her faith in that she’s had doubts / questioning it, etc?

As far as apologetics goes, I read Michael Coren’s “Why Catholics Are Right”. That book is excellent, easy to read and not long (180p I think). I would actually recommend that to all Catholics and Non-Catholics. Just gotta get past the title …at least for most people. 🙂

I also really enjoyed Patrick Madrid’s “Surprised by Truth”. It has about a dozen stories written by the individuals about their faith jouney into the Catholic Church. A very easy read.

Right now I’m in the middle of reading an extremely fascinating book called The Autobiography of a Hunted Priest by John Gerard. Father John Gerard was a Jesuit Priest who ministered to Catholics and Protestants during the times of Catholic Persecution in Elizabethan England. This book is so suspenseful and intense as well as beautifully written. I think some Hollywood producer should make a movie out of it. Father Gerard wrote this book in the 16th century but the theology in this book is very rich and is still very pertinent to Catholics living today.

Have you ever considered The Power and The Glory by Graham Greene? It’s a novel, not a book on apologetics. But it is set during the Christero War, and the moral themes run deep. It is a great read.

Try Father James Martin’s My Life With the Saints. It includes some well known and some not so well known saints in the context of Father Martin’s spiritual odyssey. I have given it to many friends and relatives and all have really enjoyed it.

I want to thank you all for your recommendations. Some of the recommendations I think I will look into for myself as well.
