Hi guys,

Could you please recommend me some good books with regards to mixed marriage? Specifically Catholic and Evangelical Protestant, also if there are any with regards to the importance of having a Catholic wedding.

Thanks!

So do you already know about the canon law on it?CHAPTER V.
THE FORM OF THE CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE
**Can. 1108 **
§1. Only those marriages are valid which are contracted before the local ordinary, pastor, or a priest or deacon delegated by either of them, who assist, and before two witnesses according to the rules expressed in the following canons and without prejudice to the exceptions mentioned in cann. 144, 1112, §1, 1116, and 1127, §§1-2.

§2. The person who assists at a marriage is understood to be only that person who is present, asks for the manifestation of the consent of the contracting parties, and receives it in the name of the Church.
CHAPTER VI.
MIXED MARRIAGES

**Can. 1124 **Without express permission of the competent authority, a marriage is prohibited between two baptized persons of whom one is baptized in the Catholic Church or received into it after baptism and the other of whom is enrolled in a Church or ecclesial community not in full communion with the Catholic Church.

**Can. 1125 **The local ordinary can grant a permission of this kind if there is a just and reasonable cause. He is not to grant it unless the following conditions have been fulfilled:
1/ the Catholic party is to declare that he or she is prepared to remove dangers of defecting from the faith and is to make a sincere promise to do all in his or her power so that all offspring are baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church;

2/ the other party is to be informed at an appropriate time about the promises which the Catholic party is to make, in such a way that it is certain that he or she is truly aware of the promise and obligation of the Catholic party;

3/ both parties are to be instructed about the purposes and essential properties of marriage which neither of the contracting parties is to exclude.

Can. 1127 §1. The prescripts of can. 1108 are to be observed for the form to be used in a mixed marriage. …

Yea I know about that. I know it is possible to get a dispensation, but I would like to be able to explain the importance of a wedding in the Church before discussing about a dispensation.

What I put in red regards the validity, so I mean it is important for validity to have valid form. Maybe you mean something else by the phrase “the importance of a wedding in the Church” other than validity?

Also, the Evangelical Presbyterians hold a different view than the Catholic on marriage dissolution. It seems that having this intention would make the marriage invalid by improper consent to a lifelong union:While God intends the marriage covenant should never be broken, it is broken by the death of either partner, or in the case of adultery or such willful desertion as can no way be remedied by the Church or civil magistrates. Such marital unfaithfulness is the grounds for a biblical divorce.

But isn’t it equally valid if one were to get a dispensation to get married outside of the church? By this I mean the physical building in a non-catholic setting.

Dispensation sometimes is given for the celebration in the non-Catholic Church for the purpose of recognizing a special or long-standing relationship with a minister, or preventing family alienation.

Sorry, I don’t have any book recommendations. However, I would suggest that you talk to both of your church leaders together.

I can tell that getting married in the church is very important to you, and I wish you luck, but please remember that marriage is the coming together of two EQUALS. Your partner has just as much say in it as you do, although in every relationship one must decide where one is ready to compromise.

I am a LCMS Lutheran married to a Catholic. We had no issues getting a dispensation and the question of which church to get married in never came up. I live in an area where it is very traditional to marry in the bride’s church.

I recommend ‘God the teacher of mankind’, by Father Michael Muller, specifically chapters 33 and 34, ‘Mixed marriages’ and ‘Mixed marriages opposed to the law of God and of His Church’. It is out of copyright and available at archive.org.

Priests these days seldom warn against the dangers of mixed marriage but that is not because they are no longer dangerous.
