It seems that all books written on the subject of “proving the existence of God” from science are written by fringe Protestants. What I am looking for in particular is a book (preferably written by a Catholic) that uses scientific (not philosophical) arguments to refute the Atheist’s view that matter is eternal. BTW, I am not in need of convincing. I’m just looking for a good book that can give me ideas for ministering to Atheists. I know Peter Kreeft has some wonderful material out there but from my experience Atheists don’t seem to follow the philosophical arguments.

“The Creator and the Cosmos: How the Latest Scientific Discoveries of the Century Reveal God” by Hugh Ross

“The Fourth Day: What the Bible and the Heavens are Telling Us about the Creation” by Howard J. Van Till (this I think is one of the best)

“Genesis and the Big Bang: The Discovery Of Harmony Between Modern Science And The Bible” by Gerald Schroeder

None of these are by Catholics.

You can also try: “The Big Bang and Georges Lemaître”, but it’s very expensive. It has many good articles about Lamaitre, a Catholic Priest, and his theory of the primeval atom (what we now call the “big bang”). He certainly thought that the Big Bang was the origin of matter in the universe. Many (most?) scientists do.

However, Lamaitre also adds:

“As far as I see, such a theory [of the primeval atom] remains entirely outside any metaphysical or religious question. It leaves the materialist free to deny any transcendental Being. He may keep, for the bottom of space-time, the same attitude of mind he has been able to adopt for events occurring in non-singular places in space-time. For the believer, it removes any attempt to familiarity with God, as were Laplace’s chiquenaude or Jeans’ finger. It is consonant with the wording of Isaiah speaking of the ‘Hidden God’ hidden even in the beginning of the universe … Science has not to surrender in face of the Universe and when Pascal tries to infer the existence of God from the supposed infinitude of Nature, we may think that he is looking in the wrong direction.”

There’s a good one by John Walton called, “The Lost World of Genesis One” that’s pretty good. Rather than get into the debate of young earth v. old earth or literal 7 day vs. figurative days vs. day-age vs. gap theories, Walton goes with something more comparable to what has been dubbed the “framework hypothesis”. It’s a good read. Walton’s not a Roman Catholic, but he’s a professor up at Wheaton, so he has some credentials. And from what I’ve seen the framework hypothesis isn’t a normal protestant perspective. It’s one found more in academia, I think.

How about What’s So Great About Christianity by Dinesh D’Souza. He has three chapters on Christianity and Science and four on “The Argument from Design.”

Fr Bob Spitzer has an audio series on ETWN Archives

Where this is all discussed from a scientific viewpoint. I remember one discussion (at a seminar, not the TV show) came down to either

The universe began in time (and needs a creator)
or
The universe, based on the laws of entropy, was in a steady state and need an entity, outside of the universe, to initiate the change to a non-steady state universe (a first cause)

Cardinal Schornborns book from Ignatius Press

I recommend the works of Father Stanley Jaki (pronounced Yaki). I am attaching a wikipedia article which has a bibliography of his books. I had the great good fortune to attend a seminar by him and to bring him to my college as a guest speaker. You won’t find many thinkers with his incredible background (he was awarded the prestigious Templeton Prize for his work on science and religion.

What I am looking for is specific information about the origin of the fully complete human being, spirit and matter, rational and corporeal, soul and body.

I need the scientific view that there are two sole parents of the human species. An analysis which shows the flaws in current anti-Adam research is ideal. Footnotes citing published research are appreciated.

There is no doubt that Adam and Eve are real people. I’m just looking for ways to minister to Catholics who do doubt.

These two websites contain TV ads about Catholicism. The first is from one of the Dioceses which is using them. The second is general information.
