My Esteemed Catholic Brothers,

Hello! I was wondering if you all might be able to suggest some reading material I could look into.

I am a Catholic of the Latin Rite, and over the past year or so I must say I’ve have had a growing interest in learning more about the beliefs and traditions held by my Eastern Brothers.

Luckily, I am finally clearing off my shelves and nearly finishing a few books I have been on for sometime. Once I finish these books, I would love to be able to start reading and studying into the many different Rites of our great Church.

I must say, our wealth of tradition seems so great, that I have no clue where to start. What book(s) would you recommend for one who wishes to gain a better appreciation into our Church and the lives and traditions of my Eastern Brothers.

I thank you for your help and I do apologize if I might have phrased anything incorrectly or confusingly.

In the Peace of Christ,

Cid

Donald Attwater’s The Christian Churches of the East is a gold mine of information.

It is rather difficult to find books on the Eastern Catholics. In terms of history, I’m sure there are many of resources here on the internet. In terms of thought, the best resources tend to be books published the Orthodox as they share common thought. I wish I could give you more, but I am unaware of any books…

I will look around if I get the chance, though, OK?

Prayers and petitions,
Alexius:cool:

There are numerous books about Eastern Catholicism to read. Some Orthodox books do not contain problematic content and are also good, but someone just learning about the east would need to have some guidance from a trusted person before delving into those waters.

I don’t think you can go wrong with anything from here or here. All of the below are written by Eastern Catholics.

101 Questions and Answers on Eastern Catholic Churches by Deacon Edward Faulk

A Guide for the Domestic Church

Light For Life
Part One: The Mystery Believed
Part Two: The Mystery Celebrated
Part Three: The Mystery Lived

The Eyes Of The Gospel: Introduction To The Spirituality Of The Eastern Church by Archbishop Joseph Raya

Byzantine Church and Culture by Archbishop Joseph Raya

For that matter, *anything *by Archbishop Joseph Raya 🙂

The Liturgy of the Hours in East and West - by Fr. Robert Taft (I haven’t read this one but was recommended it.)

Are We All Schismatics? (Or, We Are All Scismatics) by Archbishop Elias Zoghby

A Voice From the Byzantine East by Archbishop Elias Zoghby

Saint Basil the Great by Archbishop Joseph Tawil

American Eastern Catholics by Fred Saato

Interesint as Attwater’s books on Eastern Christianity are, keep in mind they are written from a Latin standpoint. They are not really Eastern books on Christianity, but Latin books on Eastern Christianity.

An excellent point, Your Grace, and one that I should also have made in noting that the info in his works was dated.

Many years,

I asked this question as a Greek Catholic and my priest told to read books from Orthodox authors. :coffeeread: : In a large part you can gain a similiar sense of Eastern Spirituality from reading solid Orthodox published books. Light and Life publishing, St. Vladimir press are a few sources to name a few.

Thank you all for the book references. I’ll start looking for them this weekend in the local libraries (they contain an large quantity of books of every shape and size) to try and save a little :twocents: 😉

While I would like to just dive into some theological content, I suppose it would be prudent to read a more indepth history then of those I have so I don’t end up drowning (what a way to go).

God Bless.

May I also suggest “Light of the East: A guide to Eastern Catholicism for Western Catholics” by Monsignor George Appleyard (of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of St. Josaphat in Parma).

Vladyka, ??]

Undoubtedly he was Latin, and the books are several decades old, but he grasped things that some of our posters here still don’t grasp today. I’m referring to his extensive comments about latinizing issues.

Probably the BEST introduction to the Eastern Catholic Churches (particularly the Byzantines) is Archbishop Joseph raya’s The Face of God.

You can locate this text here:

His other writings can be found here.

My father met him in seminary, where he ran the Eastern Catholic Club (my father). From what I have been told by him and others, Sayedneh was truly an extraordinary man and great spiritual father!

Hello and God Bless
As we anxiously await His return, I have found this book useful in keeping me out of trouble:

Captivated by Your Teachings by Father Anthony J Salim

May Jesus be a light for all to emulate
For all of you are children of the light and children of the day.
We are not of the night or of darkness.
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.
For the bidding is a lamp, and the teaching a light,
and a way to life are the reproofs of discipline;
The LORD is my light and my salvation,
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life,
of whom shall I be afraid?
If you remain indifferent in time of adversity,
your strength will depart from you.
When I caught sight of him,
I fell down at his feet as though dead.
He touched me with his right hand and said,
"Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last
For Thy life is our way:
and by holy patience we walk towards Thee,
who art our crown.
