Book recommendations?

My books are due back at the library this week and I just finished the one called “An Army of Angels” that is about Joan of Arc. I really enjoyed it and was wondering if anyone here could please recommend me some other good books about the saints.

If there is any book that pertains to something about Catholocism, that you thought was really good, please let me know.

I love books about the saints, but my favorites are books written by the saints! St. Theresa of Avila and St. Francis de Sales are two of my favorite authors. The older style writing takes a little getting used to, but I highly recommend reading the writings of the saints. They tell their faith so beautifully, and I love how the prayers and praises of God just pour forth onto the pages!

The following are some of my favorite books about saints:

Saints for Young Readers Volume I and II These books divide the year in half and write a page or two about a saint each day. I read it daily to my children.

Vision Books by Ignatius Press offers a whole series of books on lives of the saints written for children. I like them too and they’re very quick to read.

TAN Publishers has a huge collection of books about the saints and other Catholic subjects. I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed in anything published by TAN. The Voice of the Saints has lots and lots of quotes about various topics by the saints. It’s filled with short phrases that invite deep reflection. The 33 Doctors of the Church is a very thick book with lots of great information about their lives, writings and works. (I’ve still never read it cover to cover, but I read the chapters out of order.) **Modern Saints Their Lives and Faces I and II **tells stories of more recent 19th and 20th century saints and includes lots of photographs. It’s neat seeing what they actually looked like. TAN publishes wonderful books–I’d suggest you find their catalog and see what interests you.

And two other Catholics books that should be on your “must read” list: The Bible and The Catechism. But you probably already knew that!
 
i found scott hahn’s books “rome sweet home” and “hail holy queen”
amazing, entertaining, and wonderful in getting to know more about the Faith. and the CCC’s great too;)
 
The Story of a Soul - The autobiography of St. Therese of the Child Jesus. Very moving. Most helpful book I’ve ever read. Her love for Jesus inspired me so much. You may want to highlight and mark many passages like I did, so you can go back and reflect on them.

A Cry of Stone - a Catholic fiction novel by Michael O’Brien, about a poor girl named Rose Wabos who is very poor and is the Christ-like figure in this book. Very beautiful and very long, but you won’t want it to end.

The Lamb’s Supper - by Scott Hahn. Outstanding and well-researched book about the Mass, one of my favorites.

If you are interested in books about Saints, I would recommend St. Francis of Assisi by G. K. Chesterton. Enjoy!
 
dangit! you snooze, you lose in this forum.

most of my AUTHORS have been taken already - o’brien and chesterton and hahn. i’d recommend both saint biographies by chesterton - francis and aquinas. i’d recommend everything by o’brien - esp father elijah.

but i’d add a few, too. in the realm of great catholic writers, don’t forget flannery o’connor and walter percy.

and then, although not a catholic, i would HIGHLY recommend ANYTHING by cs lewis. especially the chronicles of narnia, ‘til we have faces’, ‘the great divorce’, and ‘mere christianity’.

lewis’s stuff is not strictly catholic, but it is very christian, and i’ve not found anything so far that is antithetical to a catholic world view. he’s my fav author.
 
I really liked Deep River and The Girl I Left Behind, both by Shusaku Endo. 👍
