I am in need of reading material and am hoping for some suggestions through this forum.

I am hoping to find some good books on various Saints, I have no preference on which one’s I just enjoy reading about them.

I have been trying to read the Bible but I find it really hard to follow and given my busy schedule I don’t have time to join a bible study right now. Is there any good Catholic guide to reading the bible that anyone is aware of?

Otherwise I am open to books on mysticism, the Church history, Popes and so on. If it has a good Catholic basis I am interested in reading.

Any suggestions are appreaciated! Thanks!

check out on line St. Athanasius press traditional catholic library.Plenty of really good catholic books to read on line.
Also if you dont mind used books check out local secondhand book shops . Ive got some wonderfull gems on the saints there for a pittence
 
If you like reading about the saints, you will love James Martin,SJ’s book My Life with the Saints. It will be out in paperback in October and may be available now in PB from Amazon.com. On Church history, try Triumph by H.W. Crocker.

Story of a Soul, by Saint Therese of Lisieux
Confessions, by St. Augustine
Transformation in Christ, by Dietrich von Hildebrand
Spirit of the Liturgy, by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

I know a couple have been mentioned above, but I’m just casting my vote for them!
 
Books on mysticism such as the Philokalia can be compared to differential calculus.

You didn’t start by studying that. You first learned to count, and then add.

Lives of the Saints would be a better start. This way you see the Christian life lived in all sorts of contexts.

Of course, with these you should be reading that day’s Epistle and Gospel. Don’t worry about deep understanding. Just read it to see what it says and let it wash over you.

These will give you the foundation needed to profit from books on mysticism.
 
Basil Pennington has written good books on prayer.

Also, Anthony Bloom has “Beginning to Pray.”

I found a really helpful guide to reading the Bible through in a year at “Discipleship Journal”'s website. It is for a non-Catholic Bible, but the way the plan is set out, there are ‘free days’ at the end of each month for people to ‘catch up,’ as it were. One could plug in the rest of the books, like Macabees, Judith, ect, during those days.

It was very helpful keeping me on track and I read the entire scriptures in a year.
 
I just got done reading "Swimming with Scapulars’ by Matthew Lickona. its a modern book about his life, but its a good story talking about how he has transformed and lived his faith. I also recommend the Fr. Brown Mysteries by Chesterton and also if you can pick up a copy of Don Camillo by Mondo Piccolo, these are great books too!

Always, copies of books by or about saints are wonderful!
 
On History;
The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church: A 2000-Year History: by HW Crocker III.

One of the easiest, yet detailed book on the history of the Catholic Church, that I’ve ever read. I saw HW Crocker on
EWTN’s “Book Mark.”​

Spirituality;
  1. Francis, the Journey and the Dream, by Fr. Murray Bodo.
This is not another biography about St. Francis, but rather an in depth look into the contemplative side of St. Francis. It was the book that drew me towards contemplative prayer.
  1. Any work by St. John of the Cross.
  2. Foundations for Centering Prayer and the Christian Contemplative Life, by Fr Thomas Keating
    This includes three of his best books, Open Mind, Open Heart; The Mystery of Christ; and Invitation to Love.

4.Seeds of Contemplation, by Thomas Merton
5.No Man is an Island by Thomas Merton​

In all this however, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your reading.
