This is a very powerful book containing a key to the reading and study of the Jewish Talmud.

We have the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). The first recorded intensive study of the Hebrew Scriptures finished about 200 AD was called the Mishnah, which is a discussion of the laws of the Scripture for the sincere Jewish believer (or for anybody). The Talmud comes along later, completed in 600 AD and it is a study of both the Scripture and the Mishnah.

All of this can be explained as a natural process of investigation into scripture, as questions and new situations arise.

There are a whole slew of “understanding the Talmud” books at Amazon. This one is written by a Jewish professor who has written, it is said, over 900 books on Judaism (that is to say, the Torah).

It is very well-written and, along the way, there is a case study discussion of personal responsibility.

The author has a love of and passion for the subject. To paraphrase the thesis of the book, the law of God which starts in the scriptures can reasonably and reliably extended to every aspect of life. We should be very devoted to that study. to be good Jews and to be good Gentiles, too.
