Booklet to follow the Mass

So we have these blue books in the pews which have the basic prayers of the Mass in front and the readings and hymns in the back. But there is a lot of flipping back and forth and it does not list any of the priest words or prayers and congregational responses. I’ve seen a few people with their own little books that they follow which appear to be more detailed. What are these called, and can anyone recommend a nice one? My eleven year old son especially likes to follow along.
 
There are Daily and Sunday Missals available for purchase at most Church and Christian bookstores as well as from on-line Catholic shops. I use the Pauline Sunday Missal which cost around $25 at a local church bookstore. I find that following the readings visually helps me focus better than just listening especially if there is a lot of noise or poor acoustics in the church.
 
I’m sorry to not have included the Latin version of the Missal if you are referring to the Traditional Latin Mass, I have one by Baronius Press which cost $55 or so on-line.
 
I have a Roman Missal which is a little cumbersome to use but then I was gifted a subscription of the monthly magazine Magnificat which has the daily readings and the order of the Mass with the prayers and creeds. It also has essays and meditations. It’s small enough to fit in a purse or back pocket. My gift subscription was for two years and I just sent a renewal for another 4 years. It was less than $140 for the four years so really not too spendy.

While I like having the readings for Mass, Sunday & daily, I really enjoy the essays and meditations. When I find one that really speaks to me I mark it and at the end of the month I cut it out, paste it in my journal, and write about what or how it makes me feel.
 
You are looking for a hand Missal or Missalette. You can buy perpetual ones that are good for years upon years (unless they revise texts). They vary in durability, cost, size, and Sunday/everyday versions. These, too, may require a lot of flipping about, but most have several ribbons for bookmarks. I use this one:

You can also find subscription-style, where they mail you one that’s good for a few weeks or months at a time before the next one arrives and you toss/recycle the old. These often have less page jumping. This is a popular one:

Be sure whatever you get is appropriate to the place you live (U.S., for instance has a different translation of readings than U.K.)

Not sure if you are wanting to invest in a subscription yet, though. It has a booklet for each Sunday that includes ALL the words and the responses as well as the readings for that day. We just joined the church this year at the Vigil and I would say that this has been extremely helpful- even for me 🙂

Another helpful thing for you may be the “pew cards” that is offered on the Magnificat bookstore site.

It doesn’t have the daily readings but does guide you through the mass and is small enough to keep in your purse, etc.

there is a St. Joseph Sunday Missal in paperback that usually sells for $5.
You can also subscribe to Magnificat, This Day or the Word Among Us and they have daily readings as well as interesting articles on saints or the faith and special prayers and also include the Order of the Mass.
They are wonderful ways to keep up the spiritual reading all week long
with the readings from the Mass each day.
