I’m not Catholic, but very interested in the faith. Can anyone recommend a good book(s)? Thanks!
 
What Does Scripture Say? It’s a Topic and answer type book. (with Scripture ref.) You might find this very useful. It’s 105 pages long. Cost is $1.00 You can find it at www.catholic-soe.org.
They also have other booklets, pamplets, and CD’s. Nothing over $1.00.

Catholic Answers has a good book. It’s called The Essential Catholic Survival Guide, you can find it on this website. This is also a question and answer type book, for people who want to better understand the Catholic Religion.

**Where is that in the Bible **by Patrick Madrick This is a good book, a fast read, it’s also shows you “where in the Bible” things are that Catholics Believe.

Christian Family Outreach has several small “booklets” that are Free. You can order all of them if you wish…Shipping is also Free. www.christianfamilyoutreach.com There is no “hook” and no one will solicet you.

It’s basically a Catechism, but it’s written in VERY easy language, but it isn’t dumbed-down. I simply cannot support it enough.

If you need only one book, it’s THIS ONE.

I echo the Bible Christian Society lectures. They are VERY good.
 
I second Catholicism for Dummies. It’s not really just for dummies tho, it’s great as a learning tool and a refresher for Catholics who don’t know a whole lot about their faith. It is not to be confused with The Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism which I have heard teaches a liberal, watered down version of the faith and does not teach the truth about the Church.

Catholicism for Dummies is about the “ideal” Catholic Church, where contraception is prohibited. The Idiot’s Guide is about the “real-world” Catholic Church, where 95% of Catholic couples use contraception anyway.

I third the Catholicism for Dummies. I will keep you in my prayers too.
(you’ll get the truth of Jesus’ teachings, not the world’s teachings from it.)

I would assume that someone reading a book recommended as one in which a person could learn the Catholic faith and traditions would want to read a book that wrote about the Truth as it is really taught by the Magisterium (those bishops who fully agree on the Faith with the Roman Pontiff). For example, contraception is taught to be a sin - whether a certain number of people do it or not.:rolleyes: A lot of people blaspheme also,…

Here is what the Idiot’s Guide says about this:

Following Vatican II, Pope Paul VI gave a strict interpretation of these teachings in an encyclical called Humanae Vitae (Latin for “of human life”). The pope declared, “Each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life.” Humanae Vitae set the church spinning. There were questions from bishops, theologian, pastors, and congregations that still have not been answered.

Sociological data reveal that approximately 80 percent of practicing Catholics do not follow the church’s official and authoritative teachings on birth control. Catholics report that their parish priests support them in the decisions they make in this matter. However, abstinence and the rhythm method are the only acceptable forms of birth control.

My opinion is that this text gives a more accurate and complete description of the Catholic Church as it really is than anything you will read in the Dummies book.

Right there shows misinformation - besides which, since the Church is not a democracy, what clerics question may be their own misunderstanding since clerics of the Church (except the Pope when teaching in a matter of faith and morals - which this is) are sinners also. The rhythm method went decades ago, Natural Family Planning (NFP) is certainly not the rhythm method!

Humanae Vitae used the term “periodic abstinence”, which is wide enough to cover the variety of methods used to determine when to abstain.

Did you mean to say members of the Catholic Church? We’re definitely a hospital for sinners, so that would make sense.

I’m wondering if this applies universally, or only in the westernized world. Just curious.

That number is not what various polls say, however the percentages I’ve seen in the polls show numbers which are still very depressing. Many that say they are Catholic do not practice their faith or they do as protestants do, pick and choose.😦

So, if a person wants to find out the true teaching of the Church they should read Dummies and if they instead want to find the lowest common denominator amongst Catholics (which includes baby killing ala “Catholic” politicians, I’m afraid) they should read Idiots Guide?

The 99.9999% is the percentage of Catholics who aren’t the Pope (or a bishop in an ecumenical council). By your statement that “the Church is not a democracy,” you seem to be saying that whatever these 99.9999% of Catholics think or feel or how they act has no business being in a book about the Catholic Church. The laity are more than mindless ciphers whose only role is to “pay, pray, and obey”.
