I will soon be having a friend, who is not Catholic, attend Sunday Mass with me. Can anyone suggest a booklet that can be used that explains the Mass as it progresses?

Understanding the Mass by Fr. Maynard Kolodziej is a good one.
It explains where certain parts of the mass come from (correlation to Jewish practices, etc), not just a play by play of what comes next. It is one of the books I loan to people that I sponsor in RCIA. They have it on amazon for a couple of bucks if you cannot find it in a Catholic store.

While it is not a book, be sure to look for the “play-by-play” of the mass in the front of the missel or the song book.
