Books about the Filioque

I’m doing a report on the significance of the Filioque in regards to the East-West Schism, and I’m looking for some good source material. I’m not trying to “prove” the Filioque or anything like that - I’m just investigating its historical significance. Are there any good books or articles that people may know of that talk about this?

I definitely recommend The Mystagogy of the Holy Spirit, by St. Photios, which gives the Eastern side of things (it was also written pre-schism 🙂 ).
 
There’s also PHOTIUS AND THE CAROLINGIANS by Francis Dvornik, a Roman Catholic scholar, who gives a dispassionate view.

I can give you several, but they’re pretty heavy going, and not easy to get ahold of:

On the History of the Doctrine of the Procession of the Holy Spirit, HB Swete

Trinitarian Theology, East and West, Fahey and Meyendorff

Medieval Apologetic for the Filioque, Dennis Ngien

The work that really started the East on its path on this issue is the already-suggested Mystagogy by St. Photius. For the works that started the West on its path, read St. Augustine, The Trinity and St. Anselm, On the Procession of the Holy Spirit.
 
Thanks guys! I picked up some books by Photius I and Meyendorff and they look great.
 
Something I probably should warn - Photios is really, really deep, especially if you get a more scholarly translation. My last priest loved him, but he also had a PhD in psychology. 😃 When I read Mystagogy, I had to read each part individual and really let it sink in.

Speaking of which, the feast day of blessed Photios is upon us. Hurrah!

Please be aware that these are first hand translations into English from the original Greek - and so references to “Papists” contained therein should not be understood as a derogatory term to describe Catholics.
