Hi all. I’d like to read a book explaining what happens at the Mass, why we do what we do, explaining the Eucharist etc. I really want to deepen my faith and understanding. Do you know of any books like these? What are some of your favorites. Thanks!

God bless.

Catholicism for Dummies isn’t bad as a starter.

My mother-in-law gave me another one that was more detailed. I think it’s called “The How-To Guide to Mass,” but I can’t find it on Amazon …

UPDATE: Just found it. It’s "The How-To Book of the Mass: Everything you need to know but no one ever taught you" by Michael Dubruiel

I have read The Lamb’s Supper. It was really good. I even read one the other day written for children and it gave a very good explanation of the Mass. It was simple - no deep theological reading - and made it very easy to understand.

The Hidden Treasure, Holy Mass by St Leonard of Port Maurice (1st half of 18th century)

The Incredible Catholic Mass, An Explanation of the Mass by Fr. Martin von Cochem (1704)

Jesus Our Eucharistic Love by Fr. Stefano M. Manelli (1973)

The Hidden Manna, A Theology of the Eucharist by Fr. James T. O’Connor (1988, 2004)

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; Dogmatically, Liturgically, and Ascetically Explained by Rev. Nikolaus Gihr (1902)

Do you happen to remember the title of it?

It was one of the St. Joseph PICTURE BOOK Series. They keep several in the Adoration Chapel for children to look at when they accompany their parents there I believe it was 489 - Mass for Children. It started with the offering of Cain and Abel, then the Sacrifice Abraham was asked to make. Then the Sacrifice the Jewish people were asked to make by slaughtering a lamb and putting the blood of the lamb over their doors - Passover. And finally the Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, the Lamb of God. The Passover meal Jesus celebrated at The Last Supper where he instituted the Eucharist. A good book for children or anyone who wants to understand the Mass in simplicity.

If I was only recommending one book it would be the full edition of the Roman Missal. I am in Australia, so the copy I have is “Roman Missal, English translation according to the third typical edition, approved for use in the dioceses of Australia, England and Wales, and Scotland”, published by Catholic Truth Society, in 2010, ISBN 9781860827303 (the Study Edition).

The Mass can often include other sacraments, so also useful would be newer editions of these books:
The Rites Volume One, Liturgical Press, 1990, ISBN: 0-8146-6015-0.
The Rites Volume Two, Liturgical Press, 1991, ISBN: 0-8146-6037-1.

The Mass can also be combined with the Liturgy of the Hours.

For Mass with a bishop, another official liturgical book is: Ceremonial of Bishops, Liturgical Press, 1989, ISBN 0-8146-1818-9.

For understanding the Mass I would recommend the cathechisms: Catechism of the Catholic Church, Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and YouCat: Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The official liturgical books above are quite expensive, so a more “budget conscious” approach might be:
Catholic Mass for Dummies, by Trigilio, Brighenti and Cafone, published by Wiley Publishing, 2011, ISBN 9780470767863.
Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite, 2nd Edition, by Bishop Peter J. Elliott, published by Ignatius Press, 2004, ISBN 9780898708301.

The Mass: The Glory, the Mystery, the Tradition by Cardinal Donald Wuerl is a wonderful book.

I gave it to my protestant parents, and they are really enjoying reading it.

Short and sweet - “Mass Appeal” by Jimmy Akin

Great book on the new revisions and the mass as a whole - “Mass Revision” by Jimmy Akin
