I am seeking books in furtherance of my understanding of the gospel. I no interest in fiction related titles. The saints, apolegetics, etc are some of the areas I read a lot of.

There is a book of the collected tracts of St. Francis de Sales which had been distributed throughout Geneva to the children of John Calvin, who were living in Bp. de Sales diocese. They are published by TAN Publishers under the title, The Catholic Controversy. Just google “TAN Publishers” and look around.
Seeing that you are LDS, this book came to my mind for you in part because 200 years before Joseph Smith proposed a literal understanding of proxy water baptisms for the dead, the great doctor of the Church gives an authentic and distinctly Catholic interpretation of I Cor. 15:29. You will find the discussion of the passage late in the book, around the 360’s in page number. This only occupies about three pages, but I think it is important for Latter-day Saints to see sometimes that there is occasionally a plausible Catholic response to LDS observations that are not provided by Evangelicals. In the rest of his work, without having the intent to speak to “the LDS Controversy”, I believe St. Francis goes a long way toward showing that the so-called Reformation and therefore any Restoration could not proceed because the Catholic Church has, in the midst of many crises, always maintained Apostolic unity and integrity, (in my obviously biased opinion). So far I’ve found two very good books which teach about our beliefs. The first does have the Imprimatur. The second was reviewed for accuracy by his priest but not a bishop. I hope one day it will be.

A book written to help Catholics and non-Catholics understand the beliefs and where they came from. - Born Fundamentalist Born Again Catholic by David Currie
A book written by someone who converted to Catholicism. He researched church history and could not escape a belief that the Catholic church was the original church. His family also converted. He explains various Protestant beliefs and how they compare to Catholic beliefs including end times beliefs. It would be great if a Bishop would review this book.

Anyone have any good books they have read? I’m reading “A Concise History of the Catholic Church” by Thomas Bokenkotter now.

For the Catholic understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, you should have a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It’s similar to Gospel Principles, except it goes into more detail. As someone said, the books by Scott Hahn are great, and are in more accessible language than the Catechism. If you’re interested in the sacraments, you should read “Swear to God: The Promise and the Power of the Sacraments”.

If you’re interested in the Catholic doctrine on deification (theosis), you can read “Deification and Grace” by Daniel Keating.
