I have a girlfriend who is a believer of “Bible Only” or sola scriptura. I am trying to open her eyes to the Catholic faith and how we are in fact very biblical. When starting to study our Bibles hers is the KJV, mine the RSV, I was using the Cavins study timeline to read through the chapters. She noticed that Maccabees was used and she really now rejects the whole timeline saying that the Maccabee book is uninspired because it is not in her KJV Bible. I am trying to explain to her that the 7 books where always included at that it was not til 1500’s that they were removed from some Bibles. Does anyone have any good ways to explain this better to her? Biblical proof would be best as with her beliefs.

Thanks
ps you know I really wish her Bible would say something like “Protestant Edition” because since mine says “Catholic Edition”,it makes mine look like it is the odd ball out and made special just for Catholics!! ha:D when hers was made special just for protestants.

The festival of lights (hanaka) comes from Maccabees
Christ celebrated this holy day(i believe John)
If it was good enough for Christ why wouldn’t it be good enough for her

Have you asked her why she is sola scriptura? Ask her to show you in the Bible where it says Bible only.

You could try to show her in John 10 where Jesus celebrates the Feast of the Dedication, which commemorated the events recorded in Maccabees. But if she has been raised to believe all the “Catholics added books to the Bible” stuff, it probably won’t make any difference.

Is she a “KJV-is-the-only-inspired-translation” Protestant? If so, you might point out to her that the 1611 KJV (the one that was the original translation, presumably inspired) included the deuterocanonicals, and see if that makes her willing to at least consider them as “useful” or “historically interesting.”

If she’s not, ask her if you can continue your studies with a translation that is acceptable to both traditions, such as the RSV.

Either way I think I’d consider starting your studies in the New Testament, where there is no argument between Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox about the table of contents, and you can focus together on the texts themselves.

BTW, congratulations on being able to engage in Bible Study with your girlfriend!

After explaining the history of how the Bible was put together, you can show her the following (link posted below). It will show her what the Bible looked like up to the reformation. Then ask her why the KJV no longer looks the same. You should also inform her that the first edition of the KJV (1611 KJV) had all of the same books, although the ones now missing were relegated to the back of the Bible and listed as uninsiperd.

On this site you will find the British Library’s two copies of Johann Gutenberg’s Bible, the first real book to be printed using the technique of printing which Gutenberg invented in the 1450s.

well I am trying! I have known her quite some time and in order to move further in our relationship we need to have a spiritual relation as well. One thing is for sure that with her sola scriptura background it has really got me diving into scripture to study my faith!

You know, her willingness to entertain the very idea that Catholic Christianity is worthy of investigation is reason for hope. Be patient with her, listen to her objections, and gently treat each one with generosity, but stand firm in the truth. If she’s anything like me it may take her years to realize the truth. It may be that the Lord is relying on you. Keep trying, you may have a keeper there. Your reward may be right there in the palm of your hand.

Also, go with her to her Protestant service and be supportive. Then ask her to attend the Mass with you. The real presence of Christ has been known to work wonders with those who are seeking.

I have gone to services with her. She has only came a couple times with me. It is hard to get her to go because she very hesitantly goes. She always questions me when I attend her services tho…She says that I dont think her service counts because I must always still go to Mass even tho I attended her service. I try to explain that I am missing certain parts that can not be obtained in her service and that I am not “counting” anything but feel that I need to have the body, blood, soul, and divinity of my Lord Jesus Christ. And I get that through the Mass!

Well, she has to be charitable. She has to understand that a Protestant prayer service, as inspiring and beautiful as it might be, is not the same as Holy Communion, and that it has nothing to do with her devotion, but with yours. Help her understand the idea of sacramental faith. Prayer and devotion certainly “counts,” but anyone can pray and be devout at anytime. Holy Communion is a unique experience. Help her understand that it is a deep and abiding need that you have, a need that binds the physical with the spiritual, that no amount of prayer can replace. I think instinctively she may realize this, or she wouldn’t take offense.

Well I will need many prayers. As I have a lot to work through…As she believes in Serpent Seed Doctrine, No Trinity, No incarnate, Hell is not eternal, and one of the bigger ones is that her preacher taught that the Catholic church is the fullfilment of the mystery of Babylon in Revelation.

I see her as lost and searching since she rarley attends those services. In fact she attends no services regularly and has asked me to help. She is just reluctent and after researching the faith she grew up on I now know why she is so reluctent to go to a Catholic Mass.

If we all could say a prayer to St. Monica for this special young girl. Pray that she will find her way.

Prayers indeed, for her in her searching and for you as you walk beside her. And yes, it is a very good thing that you are learning more about your faith in the process!

Since she’s sola scriptura, ask her where in the Bible it says which books belong in the Bible.

If she cannot support the Protestant canon from scripture, why do you have to support the Catholic canon from scripture?

I am not a Catholic, but was she is doing isn’t very wise.

Test everything. Hold on to the good. ~` Thessalonians 5:21

The Bible tells us to test everything, that means to investigate and keep what is good and deny what is bad.

How did she test your version of the bible study? The only way to test it is by doing/reading it. Did she read it? If she didn’t, then she has no reason of denying it. Tell her to ‘test’ it, meaning to give it a chance. Then she may judge it according the wisdom God gave her.

Yes I agree with you on your Bible verse. I feel I have done just that with her religious views, or at least the views she was raised on.

She did not read it, really all it is is reading from the Bible certain chapters from certain books that will help to put the Bible into a timeline and tell the Salvation story. She saw that one of the chapters was from Maccabees, which she says are unispired so she felt that this was a Catholic way of looking at it and kind of put it off.

I like this example very much. Although I don’t think it’s fair for her to demand specious criteria of the OP. He can’t “prove” to her that Maccabbees is inspired using Scripture alone anymore than she can prove “Esther” is!

Why Cristian B, you make your own argument as to why you should become a Catholic. 😃 Peace

I have found evidence that tells me that the Catholic Church is not really the true church, but I’m still learning. Perhaps I’ll change my opinion in the future.
