Good morning. My question is about the Left Behind Series books. Several of my co-workers are reading these and have offered them to me to read.

What is the Catholic view on these books. At one time, I thought it was frowned upon for us to read.

Am I right stating these books ARE fiction?

Your thoughts, please.

Peace!

These books are a fictional depiction of the end of the world according to premillenial dispensationalist eschatology. That said, it means they are fictional works of fiction. As such, they are tremendously anti-Catholic in bent, in fact in the opening of the book, the pope is raptured, mostly because he disagreed with what the Catholic Church had been teaching for thousands of years and agreed with dispensational rapturism. The man who replaces him is not elected by the college of cardinal, but appointed by the Secretary General of the UN and takes the name Pontifex Maximus, Peter the Great and is a self-agrandizing bubkiss. If you want to read a good piece of fiction that has more truth in it that synchs up Catholic theology, read the Lord of the Rings. If you’ve already read the series, read it again. Take a pass on the left behind pile of rubbish, it is about as close to the truth as the DiVinci Code.

Yes indeed these are fictional works but they are antiCatholic in a big way since they count us among non-Christians…
There is a terrific report on this whole series right here on the CA ma(name removed by moderator)age: catholic.com/library/false_profit.asp. It is long…in-depth, and very very good. Please read it. You may also want to copy and paste it into a word doc and then print it up. I have used to to point out all the errors that are involved in this series of books and movies.

Another point is that the whole “rapture” doctrine is a very new one that is being passed off as scripturally sound by n-Cs.

See the truth about that here: catholic.com/library/Rapture.asp
catholic.com/library/Resurrection_of_the_Body.asp
catholic.com/library/The_Antichrist.asp
catholic.com/library/Whore_of_Babylon.asp
catholic.com/library/Hunting_the_Whore_of_Babylon.asp

I realize that this is a lot, but these are all aspects of this that these misbegotten books will cause people to allege against our most holy faith.

A better series of Catholic novels is available FREE from The Mary Foundation here: catholicity.com/saintjude/

:rotfl: :rotfl: what a description!

Unless you are firm in your faith stay away from the Left Behind series. I did read most of the books and I will say that I was highly offended by them. Scott is correct the Lord of the Rings would be a much better read.

God Bless

I have read the whole series for apologetic purposes. Not only are the anti-Catholic, but they are very poorly written as well. The factual errors contained in the books are amazing.

The central character of the book, Rayford Steele (IIRC) was a commercial airline captain. Since he is the best of the best, of course he is chosen to be the pilot of Air Force One. Give me a break.

You mean you didn’t know that the Air Force customarily selects commercial airline pilots to fly the President around?

Lahaye even had the audacity to say that he would like to cast Mel Gibson as Rayford Steele in the movie. Ugh.

They are anti-Catholic garbage. A waste of perfectly good paper and ink…

Oh I’m going to get nailed…but I liked all of them. I wouldn’t read them for any theological insights, but I found them quite entertaining. I guess I didn’t read enough into them to find the anti-catholic stuff, nothing really stood out and yelled “anti-catholic” to me. Mind you, I’m not looking for that kind of silliness and know enough about my faith that I may have just disregarded those details. I do find the whole rapture/tribulation concept interesting…misguided, but interesting.

Regards,
Jennifer

THese books are very, very Anti-Catholic…LeHaye in a lot of his books portrays the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon and the Pope as the anti-christ…these books are beyond fiction…they can be put in the same class as fairytales, etc…they are pure garbage, a waste of money…and partly responsible for why people have bad opinions about Catholics.

I have read them, and like them too - they are an easy entertaining read, and they are FICTION. They are not Catholic to be sure, but they do NOT blatantly call the Catholic Chruch the Whore of Babylon.

These authors have been found to deal with some questionable groups etc. in real life, but I read the books because they were entertaining not because I thought they should replace my CCC or something.

I do think it’s weird that we must believe our religion is so fragile we can’t read fiction that contradicts it. Do golf fans enjoy a novel about a 10 year old kid beating Tiger Woods in the Masters? Do we read about a young girl becoming President of the United States? These are just as blasphemous…

I actually improved my knowledge of the Catholic Church by reading parts of the CCC that the story related to. I don’t think it’s as bad as people think as long as someone you know knows the difference. But wouldn’t it be great if these books got them thinking and talking to you about Christ, when before they didn’t vare, and you could wshow them the authoritative difference? Does anyone believe a ficitonal paperback novel defines their faith? If you believe as I that the biggest enemy the Catholic Church has is indifference these novels just may be a small start on the true path to Christ.

There are some whose Faith may not be as strong as yours and a book like this could lead them astray. Likewise, those things you mentioned are not as blasphemous as they are not lies about God.

I read them all. Got them at the library. I don’t often buy books of fiction. The story line is kind of stilted like those dramaettes you sometimes hear on Christian Radio. There is lots of action, hyperbole, and suspense. More like cheap science fiction than a quality tale. Unless you devour books like a machine, I think they are no where good enough to waste limited time for reading. There is no doubt in my mind that the authors don’t have much use for Catholics or Jews except as targets to be “saved.”

Read Scott Olson’s “Will Catholics Be Left Behind?” for a full explanation of why the series is Anti-Catholic and seriously flawed in its theology.

Peace and Charity,
