Books on Catholic doctrine and practices

Hello, I think this is the right place to put this, but am not 100% sure. I am looking for a book that explains Roman Catholic doctrine, and church practices. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am familiar with most protestant denominations, so I am not a complete stranger to the Roman Catholic church practices that are held by most denominations of Christianity such as the trinity, Eucharist (Communion),etc, but would like some more insight on beliefs that are more unique to the Roman Catholic church such as the Pope, communion of saints, purgatory, etc. Any help is much appreciated.

For initial reading and information, go to the seach engine of this site and type in key words…like pope, communion of saints, etc…and free tracts will show up.

Pick up a Catechism of the Catholic Church. Its on Amazon (small white book) for about $8. It will give you the churches teaching on whatever subject you like.

Also, Catholic.com has amazing resources.

Be careful, once you look into the Churches teachings, you may not go back !!!

Hopefully we will be welcoming you home soon!

Also I would suggest that you watch the program “Journey Home” with Marcus Grodi, on EWTN Catholic Cable Network, on Monday nights at 7 pm CST. Reruns are also on at noon,CST. every weekday. They tell their stories of how they traveled the road your on now. Very interesting. And you will be surprised how many of his guest are former protestant ministers. Prayers and God Bless, Memaw

The Catechism of the Catholic Church would hold all that information, and give you sources to research further, such as scriptural references. You can also get clarification of devotion to Mary that many other faiths misunderstand or misrepresent. 🙂

I also want to add, so you get off on the right foot: The Eucharist beliefs are different in (most?) Protestant churches than in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church believes that the ‘host and wine’ become the actual Body and Blood of Christ at consecration; it’s not a symbol, it does not represent. It’s the body and blood, the same as and as real as our own (although ours are not by any means holy like the Lord’s).

My church is holding an adult catechism class, where we go through the entire book with a very educated leader.

A catechism would be useful. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is of course definitive, as is the Catechism of the Council of Trent. If you prefer a question and answer format, the Baltimore Catechism, No.4 is a good one, as is the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Youth Catechism I hear tell is good, but is mostly geared towards teenagers.
 
Thank you very much for all the responses! The catechism looks very good, as does the book recommended by JM3. I look forward to learning more about the Roman Catholic Church. I doubt that I’ll convert, but I suppose there always is a chance.😃
 
An excellent and easy to understand book, which is faithful to Church teaching, is Catholicism for Dummies by Revs. John Trigilio and Kenneth Brighenti. (There are some books that are not so faithful and are in error, you have to watch for that.)

This priest, Fr Robert Barron has many excellent homilies, etc. explaining the Catholic faith. He also has produced a DVD series called “Catholicism” which many parishes are now using for adult education, which explains the faith in a really understandable and fascinating manner, and is highly watchable and beautiful.
Some libraries may carry this, as it was a series on PBS, or some churches in your area may be presenting this series now or soon. If you get a chance, it is highly recommended.

I’m not trying to convert you, don’t worry.🙂 Just giving some of the best resources.

On second thought, what kind of a Catholic would I be if I didn’t try to convert you? 😃 JK

Always go to the Catechism!

A book I found helpful is* Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic* by David Currie. It’s his explanation of why he became Catholic, and each chapter is a different topic - Mary, Saints, Eucharist, Confession etc.

He explains what he was taught to believe growing up and what the Catholic church actually teaches. Excellent read, IMO. 👍

That is an excellent series, I am about to finish it myself. 👍
