Hello All,

I’m a lay Catholic studying to become a lay catholic hospital chaplain through a local catholic hospital system while simultaneously attending classes at the Catholic Distance University (CDU) to obtain the masters degree in the theology necessary to become certified.

Though I’m receiving on the floor clinical training through a Catholic hospital network, the CPE program (Clinical Pastoral Education) class is being taught by a protestant minister and all of my classmates so far have been protestant as well. This hasn’t been a huge issue, except when it comes to sharing reading resources. I’ve become envious of my classmates and instructor’s level of comfort in discussing an apply certain tools and methodologies from psychotherapy in their work with patients. This isn’t an area of study provided for in my theology master’s program, but it’s effectiveness appears to be undeniable.

I’ve attempted to read some of the books they’ve suggested, but most of them are written with a very liberal protestant theology already assumed, making it difficult for me to untangle the psychotherapeutic theory from the horrendous theology.

I’m wondering if anyone here is familiar with writers who discuss psychotherapy from an explicitly Catholic perspective. I already know about Dr. Gregory Popcak, but most of his published work seems to be more oriented towards family dynamics and marriage issues, and not really written at the more theoretical/academic level I’m looking for. I posted on this forum because I saw some comments appended to threads regarding Pastoral Counseling so I was hoping some of those same people might be able to respond to my question too.

Sorry about the highly esoteric nature of the post, but I didn’t really know where else to turn.

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
