Hi everyone! For whatever reason, I’ve been researching Islam lately (e.g. checking books like “Islam for Dummies” and “The Muslim Jesus”). I wondering if anyone knew of any good resources comparing Islam and the Catholic faith. Thanks in advance!

Any book by Fr. Jacques Jomier would be a good starting point: How to Understand Islam and The Bible and the Qur’an, among others.

I haven’t heard of this author. What distinguishes his work from the rest of the pack? 🙂

Fr. Jomier was fluent in Arabic, lived in predominantly Muslim nations for much of his life, was an expert in Islamic studies, and served as a consultant to the Secretariat for Non-Christians at the Holy See. These days, in the United States, The Bible and the Qur’an is published by Ignatius Press, and (if memory serves) it includes a couple of addresses from Blessed John Paul II and Cardinal Arinze.

OK. I hope it isn’t of the “in comparison to Christianity, Islam is a flawed but still estimable religion, and Christians should learn to live in harmony with Muslims rather than seek to evangelize them” variety?

I know of a very good author, his name is Paul from Tarsus he wrote and I quote “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed” – Galatians 1:8

lol - Sorry I couldn’t help it :whackadoo:

Fr. Jomier was an orthodox Catholic and Dominican missionary to the Middle East.

I’m pretty sure Catholic Answers publishes a book that does exactly what you’re looking for.

It’s called ** Not Peace but a Sword: the Great Chasm Between Christianity and Islam ** by Robert Spencer.

I haven’t read it yet, but it looks like that might help you out. I think it’s in the Catholic Answers shop, I’ve seen a lot of ads for it here 😃

Thanks for the link. The book looks decent, and perhaps not what I had imagined.

Perhaps he clarifies this point in the book, and the article quoting him is at fault, but there seems–in light of what I’ve read and heard–to be a glaring factual error in the statement,

“According to Islam there have been several different legislations of the one true religion, as Jomier explains: ‘Muslim tradition also regards Judaism and Christianity as true religions that were forms of the one true religion, valid for a special period of history. For Muslim tradition the missions of Moses and Jesus were limited in time and space. God sent Moses and Jesus only to the children of Israel; but Muhammad came with a mission to the whole world.’”

The religions known as Judaism and Christianity (the latter proclaiming the trinity and incarnation) today, Muslims will claim, are actually corrupted versions of the originals. In other words, they aren’t valid now and never were. The religions brought by Moses and Jesus were essentially Islamic, they will explain, but were tinkered with–and distorted beyond recognition–by their followers in the succeeding generations.

Fr. Mitch Pacwa has some good material in CD format. I recently listened to The Bible and The Qu’ran which focuses on Islam’s depictions of Jesus and The Holy Spirit. He has two others one on Our Lady , The Eucharist and Islam and one called Islam and Christianity. They’re good and easy to listen and follow, not terribly in depth but its difficult to go in depth in a compacted audio format.

Some posters here would recommend Robert Spencer. Though I don’t quite agree with his approach on this subject, his books are good read on Islam.
