Anyone here have any (name removed by moderator)ut for books on the liturgy that a layman can understand?

I am looking at a few to get including:

Why not start with Pope Benedict’s opus magnum (great work), the Spirit of the Liturgy? That should be your launch pad since it is an excellent book on the Mass.

You might also want to do a search on www.Amazon.com and look up books written by Msgr. Romano Guardini since he is one of the early pioneers of the Liturgical Movement and a strong influence on the Holy Father. You might also want to pick up a copy of the third edition of the GIRM, which is published by the USCCB.

I have read this book by Crouan and, although it is a useful survey, be aware that as Ignatius Press says of Crouan, “He is also the president of Pro Liturgia, an association dedicated to promoting the true reform of the liturgy as intended by Vatican II.” In other words he is among those who believe the changes to the Mass envisioned by Vatican II were good and advantageous but the implementation was “hijacked” [his word] by those going beyond the intent of the Vat. II document Sacrosanctum Concilium. Personally, I believe it can be validly argued that, due to the vagueness of this document, what has happened to the liturgy as it is performed in many places might have been predicted.
