Are there any good books out there written by Catholics that discuss romantic love/ falling in love from a Catholic theological and spiritual point of view? As someone who is discerning his own vocation and has found himself in love, I’m interested in reading books on the subject.

There’s the four loves by C.S. Lewis. Its more of a reflection on the different types of love.

That’s the one I would have recommended. It’s an easy read, but if you care to delve a little deeper, then read JPII’s Love and Responsibility. Sri does a nice job of putting JPII’s ideas into a readable text.

‘Late Have I Loved Thee’ by Ethel Mannin

It’s a novel about a young writer called Francis Sable, who lives a hedonist’s lifestyle until a tragedy makes him re-think his life. It covers romantic love, friendship, family dynamics, discerning the vocation to marriage and the religious life and much of the story is set amongst dramatic, alpine scenery. There are all sorts of metaphors for aspects of the Catholic faith running through it.

I read it years ago, on the recommendation of my mother and loved it: the descriptions of the climbing expeditions are gripping and the writer also really brings the characters to life. It’s not a traditional love story (I won’t spoil the ending) by any means. I only found out when I tried to find a good link, that it is Pope Francis’ favourite novel too!
