I’m looking for a good book dealing with God being in control, preferably a spiritual book for the average person, and suitable for meditation, rather than a theological treatise geared towards academic study.

Books I’ve already read in this vein:
  • Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Baptiste Saint-Jure (taken from The Knowledge and Love of Our Lord Jesus Christ)
  • Abandonment to Divine Providence by Jean Pierre de Caussade
Catholic authors only, please. Thanks.

Well those are my two favorites! I read them once a year.

I just gave this book to my son for Confirmation:
How to Be Holy: First Steps in Becoming a Saint, by Peter Kreeft

He’s one of my favorite authors and the description says:
He especially draws upon the spiritual classic Abandonment to Divine Providence by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, S.J. The core of Caussade’s timeless gem is that God reveals himself to all of us through the daily events of our lives. The surest way toward spiritual growth, therefore, is by perceiving and accepting the merciful will of God in every situation.
The chapters are just a page or two so it looks great for a daily meditation.

I may need to borrow it from my son!

Oh, sorry, I just re read your specific topic.

Divine Providence, is it?

I would suggest you to read works by and about St Vincent de Paul. Because it’s all by divine providence that he is able to do so much works of mercy. Just like Mother Teresa, Venerable Leo Dupont, and St Jeanne Jugan.

If I reflect about Divine Providence, I reflect on the saints who had done much corporal works of mercy, and how God provides for them, to feed thousands of poor people, and themselves, even to this day, in their orders, even when the founder have gone to heaven. They have never lacked anything.

I don’t know if this makes sense to you 😊

I suppose if it’s about sovereignty / omnipotence, FJ sheed is an excellent author.

therese14, yes it makes sense. I was just thinking I should read more lives of the saints. Thank you for the suggestions.

Still welcoming more suggestions from others.
