So I have a friend who used to be Cumberland Presbyterian, but through our conversations he has moved away from that and into traditional Christianity. Unfortunately, however, he’s become something of a radical traditionalist, and has become particularly attracted to groups like novosordowatch.org. Since most of his problems with true Catholicism stem from Vatican II, does anyone know any books or other resources that could help with this topic?

My first question would be, has he actually read the documents of Vatican II? Or is he relying on what someone else is telling him?

If he hasn’t read them, that would be the place to start.

I’m pretty sure he’s read Vatican II. He’s well read, at least when it comes to the radical traditionalist point of view. I’m trying to find some good material to challenge him with, as well as increase my own understanding on the topic.

Most of the problems with true Catholicism do not stem from Vatican II. Why does he think that? There is no such thing as a radical traditionalist.

Peace,
Ed

Louie Verrecchio’s website Harvesting the Fruit of Vatican II may be helpful…

Your friend is correct. Vatican II was a disaster. There was no need for Vatican II. The churches, seminaries, convents, and schools were full. There were few cafeteria Catholics. The lines at confession were long. Now, all the above are practically empty.

The modernists (liberals) had been trying to change the philosophy and theology of the church going back over 100 years. St. Pius X tried to keep the modernists out of the church, with encyclicals and oaths, taken by the clergy to be faithful to the teachings of the church.

With the election of Pope John XXIII, the modernists infiltrated the Vatican. Pope John wanted to update the church by bringing the church into the modern world. What he should have done is bring the modern world into the church. As you can discern, the church along with society has deteriorated.
