Okay so I got Landscape with Dragons and read (most of) it. Boy a few of the chapters are heavy - I understand them, but I could never repeat any of them. I do like the book list AND I bought (this can get expensive!) about 20 new books from Bethlehem Books for my kids to read. The only problem is that none of the books I bought even have an accelerated reader test (the software tests they kids take at school - earn so many points and get a dress down day…) not to mention the fact that our school probably wouldn’t own it anyway… and the list from LWD has a lot of books that aren’t even in print! Our school library and our public library are TEENY TINY! I have gotten some books on ILL but they ask for the $2 shipping to get it for you…
I am just so frustrated. On top of all this, we went to our school’s Scholastic Book Fair (I think it’s a habit for our school…) and the choices were not great. My son wanted this new book out that has some crooked baseball card dealer swindle (hey that’s the name of the book!) a card from some kid - the kid and his buddies steal it back. Now that is exactly what they are not supposed to read according to LWD. Doing something evil is justified. WHAT TO DO? Why did I let him have it? I don’t know, 7 kids running around the book fair - trying to deter from buying hardcover, managed to get the SpongeBob book away from the 6 year old… the roasted weenie book away from the 8 year old… the other kids were easy…
I am thinking can I just read it with and point out the problem? I can’t do this for all the books! Can I just have them read the good ones over the summer when there is no Accelerated Reader tests? Anybody know of a grant I can write to get the school a set of decent books and tests to go with?
Thanks!
