Hi!
I’m not sure if this is the right area to post this question in (and I’m sorry if it isn’t!) but I was wondering if you could suggest any good, basic, beginners’ books about theology and philosophy. What are the best books to start off with? Thanks!

That’s a difficult question to answer without knowing more about you. Are you Catholic? What age group? “Where are you” in your life? Are you more a mystical type, or a practical type? What are your other interests?

Etc. 🙂
 
I’d like to ask the same question about philosophy books. I am Catholic and read and have read books on Catholic Theology such as Scott Hahn and others but I want to read some on philosophy by Catholic philosophers that is for beginners or isn’t too heavy if you know what i mean. any suggestions? Thanks

I was raised Catholic and have been my whole life. I’m 15 and am now trying to go deeper into the understanding of my faith. However, so far the most “theology” I’ve read is C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity and I want to learn more. Does that help?

OK - since you started with CS Lewis, I’d recommend “The Great Divorce”. Not too tough or too long.

“How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization” - by T. Woods. Another fairly easy read - not philosophy, but a wonderful summary of how we got here.

A Father Who Keeps his Promises - by Hahn.

Catholic for a Reason - Volumes 1, 2, 3. Also by Hahn and others.

Theology of the Body for Beginners - by C. West. I just read this recently and can tell you that it blew me away…

And these next 2 are quite deep - I wouldn’t start with these.

50 Questions on the Natural Law - by C. Rice (not so boring as it sounds).

The Imitation of Christ - by Thomas a Kempis.

God bless you for trying to learn more. If you ask (pray) God for things that are good for you, he will always give it to you. Ask him for help in understanding your faith, he won’t turn you down!
 
‘‘Theology: The Basics’’ by Alister McGrath. It’s a general Christian book, which at the most basic level goes through the Apostle’s Creed. Great preparation to read another more difficult theology. It is written by a Protestant, but that does not matter.

In addition, I would recommend “Spiritual Workout of a Former Saint” by Danny Abramawicz. It is an excellent book that can show you how to set up a prayer and worship routine in your life. Not quite sure if that is the type of book you are looking for, but it is a good one.
 
The Holy Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church should be the starting point for anyone interested in theology.
