Border fence would need support of Tohono O’odham tribe

TOHONO O’ODHAM RESERVATION, Ariz. - The Senate is expected to vote Wednesday on legislation to build a double-layered 700-mile-long fence on the Mexican border, a proposal already approved by the House.
If the fence is built, however, it could have a long gap - about 75 miles - at one of the border’s most vulnerable points because of opposition from the Indian tribe here.
More illegal immigrants are caught - and die trying to cross into the United States - in and around the Tohono O’odham Indian territory, which straddles the Arizona border, than any other spot in the state. Source
It will be interesting to see what compromise is reached on this issue.

If they object to the fence on the border perhaps we should fence off the whole reservation and inspect every person who leaves for proper ID.

Well Washington could give the Tohono O’odham tribe an ultimatum. They can either let the fence pass through their reservation, or it can just be skirted around them and they can be part of Mexico.

However obviously it is well past time this bill was passed…
