Hi everyone. I suffer from borderline personality disorder among two other mental illnesses. Those two other mental illnesses being major depression and anxiety disorder. I am just curious, could borderline personality disorder be the result of demonic influences? If so, what can one do about it? Also, does anyone else on here have borderline personality disorder? 🤷

Someone close to me has this disorder. I doubt very much that demonic influences are the cause of it, though the quick mood shifts into really dark hostility might feel demonic, when you don’t understand what the cause is. I read this book amazon.com/Stop-Walking-Eggshells-Borderline-Personality/dp/157224108X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b and it helped me understand the disorder and have a much better relationship. It has plenty of practical information for someone suffering with BPD also.

Yes, I have heard of this book. I would like to possibly get it through the library or something. I am also going to recommend it to my boyfriend to read. Thank you for your post. 🙂

Hi Holly,

I too have a friend with Borderline and also have the Stop Walking on Eggshells book. I have not read the whole thing, but it has some very helpful things in the parts I have read. Here’s a link to Bookfinder.com that can help you locate some relatively inexpensive copies if you should want to purchase it: bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&qi=YZjm1LQ3r,KN7C58.RBEWbSba4g_8062905417_1:3:245&bq=author%3Dmason%252C%2520paul%2520t%2E%253B%2520kreger%252C%2520randi%26title%3Dstop%2520walking%2520on%2520eggshells It truly is an invaluable book for those who care for, and about, people experiencing this disorder.

And no, Holly, as hard as it may be to live with this, I don’t believe it’s demonic. And I would pray that no one would ever suggest such a thing to you, making an already intensely difficult situation even worse.

My prayers are with you and those who love you.

Holly, BPD is a real, physical disorder caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. A mental illness is no different that an illness in any other part of the body, other than mental illness has the power to affect behavior in ways that other afflictions do not.

That being said, demons can attach to a mental illness and egg it on causing spiritual difficulties in addition to the problems caused by the illness itself. It is definitely possible to have demonic attachments if one has past involvement in the occult. I recommend frequent prayer, frequent use of the sacraments, and commitment to remain in the faith and in a state of grace.

Getting rid of demons, if indeed they are harassing you, does not guarantee complete healing of your BPD. It is possible your illness is a cross God is asking you to bear for the good of your soul in the long run.

Here’s a link to some spiritual warfare prayers that you may find helpful.

I have bipolar disorder with delusions and psychotic features. There were times before my medication was administered that I thought I was being tormented by demons. But now that I’ve stabilized I find joy in just being a boring old everyday sinner that Jesus has to hold very close because I couldn’t handle a demon if he came at me. Mental illness is a torment and I know who you would find it demonic. I will remember you in my prayers. Kate

The answers have been really good so far. I would like to add, tho, that your illnesses may be just cause for you to receive the Anointing of the Sick. Ask your priest about it.

Hi Holly,

I found the following very helpful. This guy is a Catholic psychologist and spiritual director based in San Francisco. He has a lot of self-help for BPD based on Catholic mystical spirituality. chastitysf.com/

In fact, one of the personal “success stories” he has posted on there is my own. I think that his counsels are very sound and Catholic, though that is not to say that they are not challenging. His basic premise is healing through prayer and complete surrender to God. Hmmm… “basic”… actually recovery was quite a struggle for me!

Try it out. It worked for me. It might work for you. If not, that’s fine. I think it is important if you are seeking explanations about the nature of mental illness to pursue it. It is helpful to find something that fits for you, though to remember that we don’t really know. I find “models” help me, to the extent that they help in my search for meaning, as long as I don’t use them to browbeat others. The only Truth we can be sure of is the one that God has revealed to us, and I don’t think he has revealed anything authoritative to us on borderline personality disorder.

Hope that helps.

How beautiful! God bless you!

Thanks for sharing that site. It appears to be faithful to the Church and has some good advice. I am glad to see a site talk about “Catholic mystical spirituality” correctly, and not from a New Age standpoint. Great resource! 👍
