I feel a sense of boredom and ennui in my everyday life. My 2 major passions since I was in elementary school were romance and beauty. I have other hobbies, friends, and family, and those things are enjoyable, but they simply don’t excite me or make me feel that interested.

Now that I’ve decided to stay single, the only thing that I’m passionate about is beauty. The problem with that is that…it’s not enough. I’m going to buy a pair of black and white striped skinny jeans from Saint Laurent in 2 weeks, but I don’t know what to do with myself until then.

Sure, I enjoy cooking, but it’s not like I sit there thinking, OH MY GOD, YES!!! I’m going to make a new recipe today I’m so excited!!! Life seems dull and full of ennui. I do talk to people but if I’m honest I find the conversations rather boring unless we’re talking about fashion or something 😃 Or the past, I like to talk about the glamorous moments of the past when I was still interested in guys haha.

I suppose I could do some traveling around the country but other than that, do you guys have any suggestions? And I guess I can join meetup groups because it would give me an opportunity to wear beautiful things so if I went on one thing a week I’d be excited about my outfit and makeup.

I suppose many of us suffer at times from ennui and boredom in our lives due to doing routine, habitual activities without many diversions. OTOH some of us find ourselves so busy that we don’t have much time to become bored. May I ask if you work, and, if so, do you find your job interesting? If not, maybe you can look into a job in the fashion industry since you seem to enjoy fashion and beauty. Perhaps you can take some courses on fashion or other courses that might interest you and where you may meet new people. Also, have you considered volunteer work at a hospital or for a charity? That would divert your attention from your own situation for a while.

hi,
how about writing poetry? i don’t get to many chances to share my poetry/ upon this occasion-i thought i might as per the following entitled “THE INVISIBLE EDWARDIAN TRAIN.” I wrote a book of poetry-unpublished as of yet/ this poem
(copy write pending please) has coincidently-a hint of fashion of an edwardian era…hope you like it, thanks david patrick

THE INVISIBLE EDWARDIAN TRAIN by david patrick

Consider-some out-dated books, unworthy to be shelved for the next
Generation, and only sold a garage sale,
You know those-
1970’s Sociology books? Did they ever pan out?
This book of ‘utopia,’ there reading promises made, not kept;
Such answers to happiness, claimed to be solved with social engineering
With a big-gigantic actions.

Dusty and damp, (I open the pages)
Finding a pleasant antique photo pressed.
An old black and white photo tells how love must have been
(As I hold it for the longest time)
Images awaken-as if a great American-romantic novel, taken from a shelf,
Now a movie playing on the old photo’s surface.

Two characters are in Edwardian dress- on their honeymoon
Two pioneers-born and bred.

A honey moon must record memory for others back home,
Forever captured by the camera man
Who holds the cord and trigger gauge,
To open the lens,
To make the glass and silver oxide film,
To make the paper print;
A photo remembering.

On the right, Mr. Jebahdia Collinsworth;
Offering a ready arm, bent angled inviting for Ms.Collinsworth.
Arm-in-arm, close, side-by-side,

Only in the style of new neat hats,
Tell difference in personality of each man or women,
His hat is worn black and tie conservative,
Yet, you can’t help but notice a lady of the sea-

Ms Collinsworth shows off-bright with attention
Her hat worn-white feather extension,
Crowning in relaxed slant

Higher and higher, all rising,
As if a top cabin of a cruise line ship-upon a sea gull perching;
Higher than the tall man standing next to her.

I see the simple act, the smile of lovers-
I hold the photo that speaks to me,
Typical once people did not smile for photos.
It takes two to smile-
Spontaneous grins being shared with happiness
Emerge from the old photo’s surface.

The steam engine is parked- exhausting busy steam
Near a wheel-hissing,
Expanding in the cool mountain air,
Jumping as if pop corn,
Collecting-into a big imaginary bag,

I hold the old photo and almost hear-
Her smile is so big and loud-that can be seen,
And heard louder than the popcorn steam.
Pop, pop, popping

Drowning out the chorus of flying V
Of Canadian geese-now silent,
Flying free from the old photo’s surface.

The sea is far away.
Trains escape from the sea to the mountains;
So to couples must escape sometimes.

The atmospheric mountain rises in the distant forest,
Home to shy untamed creatures- grizzly and cubs, elk herd, wolf packs-
That cannot be domesticated living there,
The same mountain thought to have been conquered by train tracks,

Natural things can yield the fabric of dress
Cotton plant, sheep, and silk worm; linen, wool, and silk,
Yards-and-yards in only one dress, pleated press,
Long dress, old fashioned and draping to the ankles.
Who has time to worry of the rose garden-barb and briar-that it had been torn?
Even with small-corset waist-(She is comfortable-with herself.)

The train conductor points to luggage compartment.
Jebahdia signals, by hand, to new passengers arriving.

The men walk accidently in the camera-in the background-
Of whom could have been a mystery?
Had they not been captured to toil, grasp, pull, tug on luggage,

From the Spanish armada of trunks with clothes,
It is chosen from all the rest.…one of the best-dress for walking.

Now supposedly, the train stop junction is only for a few minutes
But, shown in the face of the man, to the left-impatiently are the eyes,
Remembering the schedule. .

I grasp the old photo being entertained watching
The conductor takes glances at a pocket watch;
I hear click-it’s closed. He is making sure of his train.
Adding an expression of ‘hurriedness,’
Pacing on wooden planks.
Now,
A ladies’ pocket watch dangles, unobserved from the wife’s waist belt-
Without a care-(the way it supposed to be)
She is not aware of its swing-as the rhythm of a pendulum.

That train’s tonnage of iron and power—
Through the distance of the vale-up the mountain
Train stations are for quick stops

Ms Collingsworth waits for no train.
The train waits for she!

Feminine power is more…
Powerful enough to stop a train.

Looking at the old photo, I am impressed with the absence of fear
Shoulder to shoulder,a husband does hold her.
yet,keep polite space with grace
arm-in-arm
Wife and husband walk mobilize bolder, pace.
Jogging a memory of modern couples who show less affection

The garage sale is open-I bought only the antique photo, readily.
Returning the book of pseudo-utopia, 1970’s social studies,
(Promises were made-unkept).
They still study society.
A big-gigantic action, social plans, sweeping change:
They prefer to visit false places-

They kick a man every time when he is down.

I had seen it with my own eyes, where he had lain…
Not like it used to be, enough love to go around,
Glowingly alive on the old photo’s surface
Wife and husband knew their promise, kept elated!
I hold an intriguing photo, aware of invisible things,
Not a big-gigantic action-rather,
Small things, only a simple act to be accountable –to LOVE.

If you live anywhere near where I live (Northern Illinois), you can come and help me with the youth music competition that I’m in charge of this coming Saturday Feb. 22. We are woefully short of volunteers. You’ll hear plenty of beautiful music and meet plenty of beautiful young musicians.

Or you can help me with the skating competition that I’m working at on March 9th. We are running this competition (slightly over 100 skaters) on a pittance of volunteers, and all of us will be doubling up on our responsibilities. We would be happy to have you step up and help. Lots of beautiful skaters and skating.

Or you can help me with the one of the two American Guild of Organists activities that I am working on–on is on March 29, and one is this summer,. Lots of beautiful organ music.

Or…shall I go on? I haven’t been bored since…well, I don’t remember. When I was a teenager many moons ago, I had a life motto: “It’s a sin to be bored or boring.” Now tha I’m grown-up and old, I realize that it isn’t really a sin, but I do believe that it is important for Christians to be involved in useful work and play. Sitting around creates occasion for sin.

Your name is doglover2. If this is true, then find a local dog club and get involved. Or go volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Seriously, go volunteer. There are so many organizations and clubs and groups that are desperate for help with their projects. You won’t be bored, and you’ll find a lot of personal fulfillment in your life. And everyone will be pleased to see a beautiful person beautifully dressed show up to help out–it’s encouraging to all of us.

Good luck to you.

Hi meltzerboy! I am not working, I did before but I still felt really bored while I was at home although I felt more bored at work lol 😃 I would not mind being a makeup artist 🙂 I have considered taking a cooking class but I’m not sure if I can find one that’s not very serious like for people who are actually taking a licence, I want to do something more fun so I think going with meetup groups may be the best thing but I don’t want to show my face there until my clothes arrive so sometime in May since my clothes are getting shipped to my parents in California so I have to wait until they give them to me. I have not looked into volunteer work yet.

That’s a wonderful poem David.

Cat, I admire you for volunteering around your community <3 I do love dogs and will look into that 🙂

I feel so bored in day to day life haha xD

Where does service to God and exertions for love of neighbor come into the equation of your life? Prayer? You are a vehicle made to dispense the love of God in both thought and action. Expect to feel ennui when you are not doing what you are made to do… not as a hobby, but as the focus of your life. That does not mean you cannot incorporate your natural interests. You might help women pick out clothing provided by a local “interview” closet, or something like that. You know how feeling well-put-together gives you confidence, and how to do it. You could share your experience and enthusiasm with someone who needs it. Combining your interests with a real human connection and service to others could be very exciting for you!

(Read Song of Songs. Now that is beauty and romance!)

👍 Exactly what I was thinking.

Hmmmm yes volunteering is a good idea, I don’t think it will make me feel less bored to tears (I’ve volunteered before and I was bored out of my mind) but yeah it is a good idea:)

I understand completely how you feel. I remember Thomas More’s little ditty:
Wearied of life’
A little elf,
took a cobweb,
and hanged herself.

I get so bored, I sometimes stop breathing. However you have that black and white striped skinny jeans to look forward to. You are so lucky! If I could fit into a pair of skinny jeans, I’d even smile. I am always looking at myself too, trying to think of something that would carry any interest for more than a few minutes.
Some people have called me shallow, but it is difficult to find interest in other people, unless they are really chic. I suppose I could do some volunteering, but it all seems so worthy some how.
Travelling is good, but my really expensive Valextra luggage was scratched by some peon at Nice last year, and the excitement just dissolved.
Heavens, if I can’t find something to do soon, I may even have to grow up.

It would be nice to hop on a plane in London and visit your parents in California. Bet they would love to see you and traveling would be exciting. If you can’t afford it, perhaps they can. It is not good to be so far from family.

I don’t know how you can be bored, you certainly live in a wonderful country that has many places to explore.

Petaro, I ‘m really really really sorry that you are feeling that way too :’( My heart goes out to you. Well you can fit into skinny jeans but just get it in your size because they have different sizes based on your waist size =) If you want you can look at my blog www.hatloverblog.blogspot.com it’s about fashion. I’m really sorry that someone stole your luggage, that’s really mean of that person :’( Other than that what did you see in Nice? I know nothing about it.

Carol, my mum is coming to Taiwan in mid April. And I’m hanging out with my friend tomorrow, I’m going to cook a healthy pasta dish for our lunch. I am considering going to London to spend Christmas with my roommate and his family, volunteer at Crisis at Christmas, and volunteer with Republic, and just chill there but I’m not sure. I think you did have a point in your other post haha, because Lukasz very recently turned into a jerk after he now has a job and so he thinks he’s better than everyone else, so now I’m scared of him and since he is a violent person in general now that might be directed towards me since i’m no longer in his good graces hahaha. That’s a big factor holding me back from goingto London because he would very very likely bother me

Oh Carol sorry I didn’t see your last sentence, well I am planning to go around Taiwan in the summer by joining some Meetup groups but I don’t want to join them yet since I don’t have my nice clothes yet that I ordered and I’d rather be seen wearing them than not.

I think I am depressed. I’m unhappy all the time. The only thing that brings me any happiness is fashion. Thank God that my dad is willing to pay for my clothes because as unhappy as I still am since I only get excited about my purchases for 2 days, I would have nothing to look forward to AT ALL otherwise…

You might be depressed, and self-medicating your unhappiness with fashion. That is very possible. The problem with self-medicating with something like clothes or alcohol or gambling is that it takes more and more self-medication to achieve less and less relief for the unhappiness. When the self-medication becomes an enslaving habit that reduces your quality of life because it eats through your money or gets in the way of relationships, then you have even more to cope with.

The diminishing ability of your favorite hobby to give you pleasure is not a good sign. I would really look for some counseling.

Hehe yes I like that analogy self medicating with fashion, it has a ring to it. You’re absolutely right; I do feel depressed. I don’t think I’m getting less satisfaction about it, but for me I usually get excited when I decide I’m going to buy an item, the day before I buy it, and when I actually get it. I’m not excited about it for weeks or anything.

It’s tough but right now fashion is my solace. I have another thread where I explained why I’m staying single. When I think about the fact that I will never in this lifetime have the experience of tenderly removing my partner’s shirt before we take a shower together, I feel sick. And my mind immediately goes to fashion (in my mind beauty and romance go hand in hand and are inextricable) and that makes me feel better.

I thank my lucky stars every day that my father is willing to finance my purchases because I would have nothing if it weren’t for that.

I’ll share my thoughts here, and I will apologize here for being blunt. I’m naturally very blunt, so don’t take it personally!

If I’m to take what you are saying here at face value, it seems to me like you are searching for something and you are not finding it. You sound discontented and frustrated to some degree, and you also sound very young. I’m going to guess that you aren’t too far off from my own age.

You say your passion is for fashion and beauty, but acquiring new items does not make you happy for long.

Others have suggested many helpful things, and I am going to do so again. True happiness will never be about new purchases or anything else so fleeting. You need to find hobbies and avenues for pursuing what you are good at and you have to understand that you have something to offer the world. I’d talk about Faith and love of God, but I won’t go on much further than that because I think you know what I am talking about here, and it is the most important thing. But, He created you unique, like every other person that ever walked this planet, and He gifted you with special gifts, gave you a rational mind to think and explore, and a body with which to serve your fellow man in some way.

Life is not all about what gives you thrills. Romantic feelings are pretty much the result of hormones. They’re fleeting. And if you are, as you say, planning to stay single, I do not see the point of wishing for and relying upon them.

I live a very busy and fulfilling life. It’s very hard sometimes, and I grew up in an abusive family. I have few friends and yes, sometimes I feel down. And I have Aspergers syndrome. I am not going to let any of these things stop me. I’ve been up most or all of the night the past week delivering lambs. It’s been brutally cold and I’ve been sleep deprived, and it is very miserable, hard work. But I love doing it. Nothing can compare to the joy I experience when I’m done for the night, and I survey all the healthy mamas and babies. Each delivery that goes well is a gift and anything that goes wrong, and it can, is a tragedy. It’s a duty. It can be very boring, it is usually miserable and exhausting this time of year, and it’s physically a lot of work. But there’s enormous satisfaction in a job well done, in assisting fellow shepherds so that they have a chance to sleep through the night, and in bringing new life into the world. I don’t feel thrills, and I don’t feel excited in any way like you may be hoping to feel, but I feel a deep sense of love and satisfaction that ever remains.

I recommend you go out there with love and a servant’s heart and see what you can do to make a difference. Pray for people, and go out there and help them physically. There are many volunteer opportunities, and I can guarantee you that people, even your neighbors, would be so grateful for help. Be a friend to someone. Find other hobbies and transform the ones you have. For example, if you are passionate about fashion, why not learn to sew? Do you have a work opportunity? Even if you hate your job, you are earning that money by your own labor, and you should be proud of that. You might find the clothes that you buy take on a whole new meaning when you purchased them with money you earned by your own work, rather than relying on your father to purchase them for you.

I sincerely wish you the best and I will keep you in my prayers.

If you believe you would have nothing if you didn’t have fashion, then you have essentially nothing of what you have. Fashion is fine, but it is mere froth on the sea of all you are and all you have to feel good about contemplating. You deserve to feel some of the same pleasure God feels when thinking of the creation you are and all the magnificent creation that surrounds you! The love of a father that is beyond those “finances” is also beautiful beyond measure. If he had no money to give you, he’d still be a joy offered to you!

When we are depressed, we are blinded to beauty. Of all the beauties and joys that surround you, only one still gets through, and that only as a brief dim flicker. Get some help! You are meant to have a life that is full of rejoicing, full of thanksgiving, full of appreciation of the love of God and the love of those who have the sight to give love to you and accept love from you! You’re missing out on what God has in mind for you! Go, get some help, and get into touch with that!

Thank you very much for your message lambs. I know what you mean, I’m just saying that the only things that do make me truly happy happen to be relationships and fashion  I’m very, very, very, very sorry that you grew up in an abusive family, that’s really difficult. hugs You must love those animals very much. Do you live on a farm?

I like what you said about praying for people and helping them physically. My hobbies sadly do not make me feel satisfied at the end of the day. I could work if I wanted to, but find the pursuit of hobbies which is what I do currently, to be more enjoyable, although it also doesn’t satisfy me. But working is relatively less satisfying. Thank you so much for praying for me, means a lot to me. My name is Maya by the way =)

Easter, that’s beautiful what you wrote and thank you for understanding that when you are depressed you are blinded to beauty. When you say get help what do you mean, I mean how can one get out of depression? What are the steps that one would take? I definitely don’t want to tell my parents about it so I wonder what can one personally do on their own to get out of it.

I feel like a light went out in me when I found out that men were attracted to other women while in a relationship and I have to light up that light inside of me again with fashion. Yesterday and today I have zoomed into the picture of the butterfly skull ring I want to get in May and it makes me feel better. I just stare at it and the little crystals on the skull’s eyes.

A priest I heard once said that even when the problem is psychological, the solution is almost always spiritual. Having said that, depression that goes on for too long can cause physical and chemical changes in your brain. This is not an illness that you ought to let go untreated. If you have any thoughts of death, suicide, or harming yourself, or if this keeps going on for months, you absolutely must tell someone and get some help. Major depression is not something to fool around with, and let’s face it: wallowing around in the blues is not a good use of your time on earth.

If you do not have serious symptoms and you insist on helping yourself, I’d suggest two things. One is to get out of yourself and look for opportunities to enjoy others, help others, and be grateful to others. Let that include enjoying and loving God, serving God, and being grateful to God, too! The other thing is to look for things you enjoy and to take care of yourself physically with diet and exercise. The flip side of that advice is that if listening to your own interior monologue depresses you, give yourself as little time as possible to get wrapped up in those thoughts. Avoid depressants (such as alcohol), avoid making any life-altering decisions, and promise that you will set a date and get help if you do not feel better by that time. And hey, when you get some new clothing, by all means enjoy it. If you aren’t going to do that, why even buy it in the first place?

Good luck, and do see that you are taken care of. If the job is too big for you, don’t be proud. Get help.

What you need is to get out of yourself and start thinking of others. Do volunteer work, not for what you will learn, or what you will get out of it, but for the gifts you can give to their lives, and for the smiles on their faces. For example, given your interest in fashion, perhaps you could help cancer patients become beautiful again after their surgeries, or help homeless women put together a beautiful wardrobe for their job interviews.

If you are depressed, starting even something as rewarding as doing volunteer work geared toward fashion can seem overwhelming. I think your suggestion is an excellent one, but if it seems too much I’d tell the OP that smaller things will help, too, and might be a better place to start.

Little things can be a big help, particularly if they are done for someone and with someone you have a connection with. For instance, she might spend a Saturday helping her dad clean his garage (out of gratitude for his generosity with the clothing money) or baking with her grandmother or a little niece or nephew. If a friend is moving, volunteer to help. That kind of little one-day thing can be a good start, and is easier to talk yourself into when you are feeling blue or just lacking motivation to do anything.
