Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said anti-racism protests at the weekend were “subverted by thuggery” after some demonstrators clashed with police.

Mr Johnson said people had the right to protest but engaging in violence was a “betrayal” to protesters’ cause.

Thousands of people attended largely peaceful demonstrations in cities across the UK at the weekend.
The agitators threw bricks at the horses, one horse got excited and threw a police-woman off the horse.

Prime Minister Dominic Cummings must have decided that his spokesman had to appear to say something fairly meaningless.

I think the government in general has really misjudged the tone of the country in the statements they have put out so far.

I saw some snippets of Priti Patel in the commons yesterday and thought the focus of her speech was very off kilter and was disappointed in it as a whole. That said, I do need to go back and watch the whole thing before standing by that initial judgement totally.

I have a sister in the Met police, So would never condone violence against them. But think the governments response to the riots has been lacklustre to say the best. As a conservative voter, I was not impressed.

As an ex-(lifelong) Tory I can just continue to be aghast.

Johnson, Patel and Dick sent officers out to face a rioting mob with soft flat caps and in shirt sleeve order in the first instance. They had no interest in supressing disorder.

Reading my original comment back, I should have been more clear in stating the ‘lacklustre’ response was in regards to actually confronting the issue of racism in the uk, not suppressing the riots.

This was a very good opportunity to take a look at our society and commit to improving racial equality. Attacking police officers is not acceptable, but the intense focus on that aspect alone and not the wider issue of why the riots are taking place is, in my view, very short sighted and (As part of an ethnic minority group myself) a disappointment to me.
