Born in Nazareth?

Can you tell us something about the credentials of your scholar/archaeologist correspondent/friend, and her relation to you, that has you in a bunch over this Nazareth question? Its quite a limb you are asking people to go out on in order to entertain an idea for argument. Most people don’t want to hang out on limbs without some good reason. (Maybe with more info you’ll get someone to join you on that limb).
She’s not a friend. Just an archaeologist who was quoted in another article. I emailed her and we email occasionally. Don’t want to give info about her without her permission, which I doubt she’d appreciate me doing that on a message board.

One of the signs prophesying the Messiah is that he would be born in Bethlehem so Jesus being born anywhere else undermines the claim Jesus is the messiah.
Which is the WHOLE INCENTIVE for making such unsubstantiated claims!

When something doesn’t make sense, its wise to ask what’s in it for that person, to make them lie. When there is an incentive as big as this, then you don’t waste your energy going out on their ridiculous weak limb, you instead sit back and wait for them to provide the required proof - with good confidence it won’t ever materialize…

And its a huge incentive to make up this claptrap. Because if you could prove this, you could become a real star!, famous in your field!, because you’d be well-celebrated and oft-quoted by the strong and vocal enthusiasts of the religion of atheism. A real boon to your chosen career! You’d have made it!

And this is what matters to a lot of people - a* lot* more than truth!

Give me a scholar who stands for truth, and then I’ll listen.

Okay, well, I don’t really see the need for secrecy. If she has something to say that’s true, why would she not want to stand behind it? So as a scholar I’d say she is already lacking, in my eyes.

To each her own.🤷 she was giving me her own personal opinion.
She did say that the answer depends on who you prefer and who you ask.

I said I was not going to debate with you, since it is falling on deaf ears. That hasn’t changed.
And I appreciate your contribution here. Its an interesting thread because of what you and others have said. I think Faith1960 is stuck on her email-friend’s word, and her unsubstantiated claim, and so she is missing all the wonderful points and links provided in this thread.

Well, I do value her opinion…But I still would like to read from scholars who say Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Not the Pope, but other scholars.

Pope Benedict XVI - certainly a splendid Scholar…and one of the* greatest minds* of the 20th -21th centuries- noted that he does not see how such a theory can be gleaned from the actual sources…

PS: he held this too “as Pope” …

but he wrote this in particular not “as a Pope” …but as theologian-scholar…

Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

And that is one GREAT MIND, one GREAT SCHOLAR, one great MAN OF TRUTH.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
Would you expect him to say anything else, even IF it were true?

It’s not just the archaeologist/scholar’s opinion that bothers me, it’s all the others online that say most scholars say He was born in Nazareth.

I’m not looking for a debate. I’m looking for scholars and articles that say He was born in Bethlehem…other than the Pope or Magesterium.

Dismiss such.

One ought not let such online stuff bother you.

Anyone who would sideline a Pope as an scholarly authority just because he is a Pope is not very knowledgeable. Realize that the scholarly work of anyone who is a Pope is under the MOST INTENSE scholarly scrutiny by all of his scholar peers, including or especially atheistic ones. The scholarly naysayers would be like SHARKS on his work, looking for the* slightest* flaw as proof or reason to discount the whole lot of it.

Sirach said in posts # 34 and #39 it doesn’t matter where He was born and would have no negative impact on our faith.

Why?

Do you go to bloggers to find out what the US Constitution says? Or do you go to the US Constitution?

Scholars online have no authority…period. Zip. None.

Authority is from God in these matters and so one looks foremost to what the Authorities he gives us say: Such as the very sources themselves - the Gospels (inspired…). And the Church he gave authority to interpret such with authority and to teach the nations etc etc…

And besides as I noted Pope Benedict XVI wrote that not there that mentioned as a Theologian …(one of the very greatest of our time!) He is aware of the various writings that promote that incorrect theory …and said what he said about them…in such knowledge as a theologian…

There are good Catholic commentaries out there such as the Navarre Bible, The Ignatius, the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (Matthew …Luke is not out yet)…

I never thought of the Pope as knowing what else is being said and speaking out against it. Good point.

I asked for some good recommendations of Bible commentaries in another thread but don’t think I got a response. Thank you.

Is the Navarre or Ignatius difficult to read?
