I asked for some good recommendations of Bible commentaries in another thread but don’t think I got a response. Thank you.

They to not really “compete” for they all come from different approaches and are quite different. Go nicely together.

Well even Santa can’t afford them all, but I did tell Santa I wanted either the Navarre or Ignatius Study Bible for Christmas.

Sirach said in posts # 34 and #39 it doesn’t matter where He was born and would have no negative impact on our faith.
There is nothing authoratative in those posts. Catechism of the Catholic Church says:

423 We believe and confess that Jesus of Nazareth, born a Jew of a daughter of Israel at Bethlehem at the time of King Herod the Great and the emperor Caesar Augustus, a carpenter by trade, who died crucified in Jerusalem under the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of the emperor Tiberius, is the eternal Son of God made man. He “came from God,”4 “descended from heaven,”5 and “came in the flesh.”6 For “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father… And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace.”

Regarding the Navarre…the 3 vol hb set is cheaper than the 12 PB (but deals with same content).

There is also a different work that is one vol. but it is different but very good:

If you wanted though a selection you could do a few pb from the Navarre…a couple from the Ignatius PB and a couple from the other one (do not forget that one).

I just found an article from a NT scholar that not only says Jesus was born in Bethlehem and
From another source that says there in no evidence He was born in Bethlehem of Galilee.

I’m not looking for a debate. I’m looking for scholars and articles that say He was born in Bethlehem…other than the Pope or Magesterium.
You won’t find any documentation other than scripture and the church. Seriously, what birth records would you expect to find especially if your baby was born in a stable?

It’s not surprising there are no records unless you were a king or noble when or where someone was born wasn’t important. Christmas wasn’t even celebrated until nearly 340 years later.

Jesus is accepted as a historical figure and as such you can assume that he was born someplace. You can trust Scripture and the church for the where of his birth.

Nonsense.

Dismiss it as such.

Luke and Matthew are very good evidence (the best!)…as is the continued Teaching of the Church HE founded…

Just spoke with my (former) bible study teacher who is a theologian and she said it’s not true that Jesus was born in Nazareth and not true that the overwhelming majority of scholars think so. Yay!
I trust her over the archaeologist.

No, it’s saying He wasn’t born in Bethlehem of Galilee but of Judea, like we’ve been taught.

Actually, I think it was in a cave. 😃
A cave that was a stable. Equipped with an ox (and the donkey they brought). 🙂

I don’t know what Santa’s bringing me. I just told him the Navarre or Ignatius Catholic Study Bible.

Didn’t we just go round and round about this on another thread?
I don’t take my Scripture lessons from the Washington Post or ABC news or any other secular source.
The house of bread is much more plausible to me.
Well said!
