Jesuit or Catholic? They should be the same:
Boston College Students call on Jesuits to Choose: “Jesuit Values or Catholic Doctrine”
By Hilary White

BOSTON, December 7, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an editorial condemning the cancellation of a homosexual dance, the student newspaper of Boston College has called on the Jesuit administration to come clean about their loyalties: “BC should follow Jesuit values, not Catholic doctrine.”

The flap started when the college cancelled a dance to ‘celebrate’ homosexuality and other forms of fashionable sexual deviancy. The “safe zone” dance organized by the college’s own “GBLT” (“gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered”) student group was cancelled by the college because it purportedly conflicted with the college’s Catholic affiliation.

I don’t know if this is news to you, but a considerable swath of the Jesuit order has not been doctrinaly Catholic in a long time.

Take it with a grain of salt if you wish, but that has been my observation and that of others.

However I agree with the students, its well past time for them to come clean on their level of Magisterial obedience. Though somehow I doubt they will, they will probably just throw out a nuanced response to keep people guessing.

I have know this for along time. In fact, I believe that Fr. Pacwa is one of the few Jesuits that i know of that do not fall into this category.

The thing is,in the article, the protesting students are saying that Jesuit values are not or should not Catholic values as stated in this quote:
“BC should follow Jesuit values, not Catholic doctrine.”
Here is a link to the editorial:

Sounds like they want them to make a break with the Church.

Either be Catholic or make the break. Just be sure to strip everything Catholic from the institution. Stop the scandal.

I think Fr. Peter Stravinskas is also a Jesuit. He’s pretty solid, last I heard.

I did a search and it looks like he is a Jesuit. Also Cardinal Dulles is a Jesuit.

Though I don’t agree with the students on their point the Jesuits should make a break with the Church, however I do in that they should come clean on where they stand when it comes to Catholic teaching. And if they don’t adhere to Rome’s strictures, they should officially cut themselves off, however I just assume they reconcile.

And yes Fr. Mitch Pacwa along with Fr. Peter Stravinskas and Fr. Joseph Fessio are among the few solidly Catholic Jesuits remaining.

I think Boston College ought to dump the GLBT club instead of dumping Catholic doctrine and dogma. Why isn’t anyone calling for that?

Maybe this is the year! 👍

Well apparently no one at the College is, but I am. Massachussettes is very liberal territory, and Boston College is very much in with the mainstream of culture there. And since the institution is deeply secularized on many fronts, it would be the honest action for them to officially cut ties with the Catholic Church. However bittersweet.

I never heard this saying until today, but it certainly has never been more valid.

One can hope and pray, but somehow I doubt…

It’s sad with the Jesuits. They used to rock. Over the summer I read a good number of selections from the Jesuit Relations, which recounts the missionary work of the Jesuits among the native tribes in New France. Before discovering the Eastern churches, the Jesuits used to be my favorite priests (historically speaking). Unfortunately most (though not all) Jesuits are whacked out today 😦

Peter Kreeft is professor emeritus in philosophy there, and thank God for him! You can download some of his great lectures for free at his website: peterkreeft.com/audio.htm
On one of his talks, he jokes that BC stands for “Barely Catholic!” 😛
