A Boston Globe story today reports that both the organist and cantor at St. Gabriel’s church in Brighton are dismissed after the cantor publically repudiated a priest during Mass just after the priest had given instructions to the congregation on how to sign a petition to ban gay marriage. The cantor took the microphone and told the parishioners that they didn’t have to sign the petition. Not surprisingly, both of these individuals are supporters of same-sex marriage. Shortly thereafter, the organist quit and the cantor was dismissed of her duties. I know that some people have criticized certain parish priests in the Boston Archdiocese for instructing the congregation to sign the petition during a natural break in the Mass and that doing so was being “political”. However, calling for a ban on gay marriage is part of the teaching authority of the church and I feel that they are obligated to follow this through - the signing of a petition banning gay marriage during Mass is consistent with their need to fulfill this obligation. Besides I think that another parishoner taking the mike and calling on people to disobey their priest is outrageous and scandalous. Of course, the Globe is having a field day with this case and to them is just one more opportunity to bash the Church and present Her in the most negative light. A link to the article is below.

Its par for the course, these guys are in for the kill, of the RCAB no less.

I think its time Archbishop O’Malley begins taking a page out of William Donohue’s book, or else he may soon not have much of a flock left to shepherd courtesy of the Globe. Though I understand giving back punch’s is in no way part of his Franciscan charism, but it would now be the Catholic thing to do.

There are times to turn the other cheek, but that time isn’t now.
