Dear Forum
It seems I have bought a chicken finger plate today (Friday) and I have not eatened it yet. As I was going to sit down and begin my meal, I remembered it was Friday. Am I allowed to eat it and make another large sacrifice of faith after I eat? Or would it be considered a deliberate spite against the Church? I don't intend to do it.

No. One may not.

Today one is* obliged *to not eat meat. As a penitential practice.

These are the Fridays of Lent - one may not substitute this.

It would be sinful to do so.

One may do more - like give up meat* and *dessert…but one may not substitute.

Thank you. I’ll save it for 12:01 tonight. 🙂

Oh, these moments of forgetfulness…
  • pop the sound of the chicken soup can opening…
  • rats the sound of me remembering that I can’t eat it…
  • grind clank the sound of me trying to think whether I can just pop the can in the refrigerator for 12 hours or whether I need to put it in something else, or would it just be easier to put it in the bowl now and put it in the fridge that way with some plastic wrap…
  • slurp the sound of me eating it after midnight…

I did this today. There was left over chicken lasagna (what’s the deal with chicken today? :p). I put it on the plate, almost made it to the microwave and was like “ahhhh! I can’t have this!!”

Chicken lasagna is mine tomorrow!! 😃

A few years ago I sat down to Lunch with a buddy of mine, who is also Catholic, and we were eating Peperoni Pizza. Halfway through, I remembered it was Friday :doh2: honest mistake, but we still felt bad.

I completely innocently tasted a spoonful of my husband’s meat meal tonight to see if it was hot enough before I served it to him. Didn’t even realise what I’d done until I was washing the plate. I’m very cross with myself, I don’t normally ever eat meat on a Friday and as we’re in Lent it was particularly important today!

I was in a similar situation two weeks ago - my professor brought kolaches to class on a Friday, and I, not thinking, took a bite out of one. After I had swallowed, I realized I wasn’t supposed to eat meat, so I set it down and saved the rest for breakfast. The sin is in the intention - since eating meat isn’t intrinsically evil, it is not a sin to eat meat on a Friday in Lent if you’ve legitimately forgotten. Once you are cognizant of the situation, however, you have to stop, or else it is a sin.

Hey I stopped by subway and got a roast beef on wheat bread so I can have it after midnight tonight.

I did something very similar. I have been sick all week, so I went to the store to pick up some cold medicine and a can of potato and broccoli soup for dinner. After I had eaten 2 bites of it I thought, “Gee these potatoes are awfully soft!” LOL! I went back to the kitchen to check the can, and sure enough, it said CHICKEN, potato and broccoli soup! My brain fog was very thick, because I had purposely looked for the soup that did NOT have bacon, but never noticed the word “chicken” in fancy script on the label. So into the fridge it went, and I ended up with a bowl of Special K for dinner.

Those kolaches have got me more than once. In my case, they would show up at work, and there I went. Fortunately, one of my coworkers started calling me at the start of work on Fridays during Lent to remind me. It has been years since we worked together, but I sometimes still hear his voice when a box of kolaches shows up on a Friday.

This is another reason why I find year-round Friday abstinence easier to manage. It’s habitual, and thus there is less to remember.

Well, I am pretty talented.

I do the year-round Friday abstinance, but I am still able to forget sometimes. 😃

Does using a beef stock cube to make gravy constitute eating meat?

One time i almost made a can of potato soup…it was a lent friday…but before i opened the can, i read the ingredients…chicken stock. Glad i read the list before i made the mistake of heating that soup and eating it.

I try to eat my meat stuff up before friday…so there is nothing to eat by mistake.

I have read that it does not. But I can’t remember where it wa or give citiations. I was a little relieved because I had accidetally eaten soup like this in the past.
