My daughter and I presented the Gifts during Mass. As we were waiting for the collection to be gathered before we walked toward the priest, the usher told us “after you are done handing the gifts to the priest, do not bow toward the priest. Just return to your pew. Bowing is not done anymore.” I questioned her briefly on this, and she confirmed that was no longer the pracitce.
Question: although I doubt it, is this true? If so, why? Where would I find this?

I used the Search function, and found nothing on this.

You are offering God our gifts and the priest is accepting them on the Churches behalf. I believe that a bow or even a genuflection if the tabernacle is persent behind the altar is appropriate.

Most people bow when they present the gifts in reverence to the altar.

I have never been in a Catholic church in which those who approach the altar fail to bow or genuflect. The time honored practice includes a bow or genuflection when crossing before the altar or turning your back. I have never seen those who bring forth the gifts do other wise.
The practice, as I see it, is a family that bows before the priest when offering the gifts and then again (or genuflecting) before returning to their pew.

Thank you for commenting. I agree with all of you. I just want to substantiate or refute what the usher told me: that it is no longer the practice to bow/genuflect.

The presentation of the gifts is not regulated by the Roman Missal. There is nothing that says you must or must not bow; I would accept the local custom. It is depressing that “bowing is not done anymore”, either to the priest or the altar or tabernacle. “Reverence is not done anymore” is the death-knell for the Catholic faith.

Update: to clarify, what I mean is that neither the Missal nor its Instruction (the GIRM) describe the “rite” of presentation. It does not say how many people, where they go, what they do, etc. It is simply understood that, if needed, some person or people present some or all of the bread and/or wine to the priest and/or his ministers. Individual dioceses and parishes have their own protocols for this.

The priest and those presenting gifts in my Church still bow to each other. 🤷 Maybe they discontinued the practice at your Church?

The kids presenting the gifts bow at our parish. Yesterday one five- or six-year-old girl turned and bowed to the congregation. Her grandfather (a friendly acquaintance of mine, and sitting right behind me) burst out laughing. It was one of those “dang-shoulda brought my camcorder” moments.

Classic!
And thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut, japhy.

Maybe I’m old fashioned but I always reverence the altar. I would challenge the Pastor with, why? You are paying respect to the altar.

If we are reverencing the altar or tabernacle after we bow when presenting the gifts, who or what is the priest bowing towards? I’ve seen the priest bow back toward those offering the gifts. Therefore, I always thought that at that moment both bows were done out of respect to each other - the priest to the people and the people to the priest.
