What do you do when someone is called Jesus (Hay-Soos) and you need to call him?I learned from the sisters in the 1950’s to bow my head at the name of Jesus and it’s really automatic now. In speaking of Him we almost never referred to Him by His proper name, except in prayer, but as ‘Christ’. Of course back then the Protestants were the ones always saying ‘Jesus’. I find it funny but somewhat of a problem when discussing religion with a Protestant that every time he says ‘Jesus’ I automatically nod and it appears I’m agreeing with all he’s saying.
If you are calling someone named Jesus, you use his name. What do you do when someone is called Jesus (Hay-Soos) and you need to call him?
No, I meant do you bow?If you are calling someone named Jesus, you use his name.
Of course.
I wouldn’t. You are not calling (or referring to) our Lord and Savior, you’re calling somebody named “Hay-Soos”. A mortal. No, I meant do you bow?
Nor would I.I wouldn’t. You are not calling (or referring to) our Lord and Savior, you’re calling somebody named “Hay-Soos”. A mortal.
It’s weird, at the Spanish Mass I automatically bow my head to Jesus or Jesucristo but if I’m speaking to someone named Jesus I don’t. I don’t know why, it just happens that way. Otherwise I suppose Spanish speakers would be head-bobbing all around usWhat do you do when someone is called Jesus (Hay-Soos) and you need to call him?

Yeah I know, LOL. Do you bow during mass or do you see anyone else doing it?I do bow when Lord Jesus Christ or Blessed Virgin Mary`s name is mentioned.
But if someone calls their child for Jesus (with the pronouncation: Jay-hoos or similar and-or Mary, i do not as it is just a mortals name.
The difference is like night and day and cannot or should not ever be confused.
I do bow during mass and often i find myself being the only one doing it.Yeah I know, LOL. Do you bow during mass or do you see anyone else doing it?
I just have not seen it being done lately, not even so much by the servers, so I wonder if there is any Canon law regarding this.
Yes. Sometimes, during Mass, I feel like a Pez dispenser.I do bow during mass and often i find myself being the only one doing it.
See my 1st post #18Question about bowing one’s head at the EF Mass and the OF mass.
I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that only the person saying “Jesus” should bow or maybe the servers but not everyone.
Is that correct? Is it different for the OF versus the EF?
Thanks.
Ditto, only I never look to see if others are.I do bow during mass and often i find myself being the only one doing it.
I bow my head at the mention of any person of the Trinity during Mass or any official Church ceremony. In addition, when reciting the Liturgy of the Hours, I do bow my head as well.See my 1st post #18
I was taught (over 60 years ago) to bow(nod) my head anytime some one spoke the name of Jesus/Christ, in Church, in public or anywhere any time.
was raised this way, have been doing it for over 60 years. Watch old videos on EWTN of Fr. Peyton with people doing this as they recite the rosary. Also cross myself when passing a church. It is not a “parish” tradition it is a Catholic tradition. Ridicule is fine, bring it on, anything especially these quiet gestures that emphasizes our Catholic identity is a powerful witness.I have been to some masses where the priest and congregants bow their heads when the name of Jesus is mentioned in the Liturgy. I find it to be a beautiful tradition, but I don’t see it done everywhere.
Does your parish observe that tradition?
Also, do you bow your head outside of mass when someone mentions Jesus? Obviously in a more subtle way, otherwise you open yourself up to ridicule.
Thanks.
