I had a brown scapular and it was getting worn out (I was enrolled with that one). I know they need to be replaced when they are no longer in good repair.

I got a few new ones and had taken them to the Priest. He gave them a ‘general Blessing’. Then I read today that no Blessing for the new scapular is needed. I thought that this meant no ‘enrollment’ is needed. I guess an extra Blessing can only be good, but I also read this:

“and the formula of blessing must be sanctioned by the Congregation of Rites.” in the Catholic Encyclopedia today (newadvent.org/cathen/13508b.htm)

So… I am a bit worried now as
  1. My scapular was was blessed with a general blessing and not with such formula.
  2. The other scapulars have now been blessed as well, while they are gifts for people to get enrolled themselves
Please help!

Once blessed, always blessed. Your Scapular is fine. As for the other Scapulars, I think this should be helpful:

BLESSING AND ENROLLMENT

CELEBRANT: IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE
HOLY SPIRIT

C: SHOW US YOUR MERCY, O LORD

PEOPLE: AND GRANT US YOUR SALVATION

C: O LORD, HEAR MY PRAYER

P: AND LET MY CRY COME UNTO THEE.

C: THE LORD BE WITH YOU

P: AND ALSO WITH YOU

C: LET US PRAY
Code:
O LORD, JESUS CHRIST, SAVIOR OF THE HUMAN RACE, WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND
SANCTIFY + THESE HABITS WHICH YOUR SERVANTS ARE TO WEAR DEVOUTLY OUT OF
LOVE FOR YOU AND YOUR MOTHER, THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY OF MOUNT CARMEL,
IN ORDER THAT THROUGH THE INTERCESSION OF THE SAME BLESSES MOTHER, THEY
MAY BE DEFENDED FROM THE EVIL ONE AND MAY PERSEVERE IN YOUR GRACE UNTIL
DEATH, WHO LIVES AND REIGNS, WORLD WITHOUT END, AMEN.
Code:
                [sprinkle with Holy Water]

RECEIVE THESE BLESSED SCAPULARS AND PRAY THAT THE MOST HOLY VIRGIN
MARY, THAT BY HER MERITS YOU MAY WEAR THEM WITHOUT STAIN AND THAT SHE MAY
GUARD YOU FROM ALL ADVERSITY AND BRING YOU UNTO EVERLASTING LIFE.
Code:

CROWN OF THE EVERLASTING INHERITANCE. THROUGH CHRIST OUR LORD, AMEN.

Thank you that helps! So as for the other scapulars I assume there is no issue they have been blessed with a general blessing?

The only other thing I can think of, is to remember your old scalpular is a blessed item. Proper disposal of blessed items is to either bury them or burn them.

once you have been enrolled subsequent “replacement” scapulars don’t need to be blessed, although they can be the same as any other sacramental, and the enrollment does not have to be repeated, best to trust the priest on this and not try to second guess.

Ahhhh, and the question remains -
For those who were given a Scapular when they received First Holy Communion (years ago)…were we enrolled as children or just given a Scapular? There’s no way of knowing in my case since the parish has changed significantly. I’d like to know though. Do we have to be enrolled to get the promises / graces?
