I’m not very active on Forums because of work / family commitments but I pop in and out every now and then.

In the wake of the Boston Bombing I decided to register on a famous sunni/salafi forum.

Well 1 hour into my registration and my first post I was called all sorts of names, threatened with the sword, given the option to bash my face in with a baseball bat or a hockey stick and finally a forever ban for entrapments. I thought the whole thing was childish and at times amusing but I was disturbed at how down right mean/angry/violent these people are. But before I pop out again let me just say not all muslims are the same. What I mean is we don’t have one Islam. We have many Islams with a lot of differences among ourselves. I hope that non muslims can learn to see past the title/name and associated stereotypes.

Welcome. We’re glad you’re here. I’d really like to see you stick around and explain aspects of your beliefs that many of us might be confused with.

Again, welcome to the forums.

Well if I wasn’t Muslim I would probably be a Catholic. My Wife’s family is all Catholic and my MIL who happens to be a devout Catholic happens to live with us.

God bless you, Famdigy, and so sorry about the treatment. We must all pray for them to be led to the truth of God’s goodness that exists in His creation of human beings.

What exactly is a twelver shia muslim?
The largest Shia Sect. We believe in 12 holy Imams after Muhammad (pbuh&hf) who are his descendants. We’re sometimes called “Rafidah” translates to rejectors because we chose to reject the mainstream muslim ideology, their teachings, scholars, books, etc… We reject the first 4 Khalifs as corrupt usurpers, we reject Aisha and her rulings, we reject all of the sultans, kings and rulers of the Ummayid and Abbasid dynasties as usurpers. Originally it was used as a slur but in time Shias embraced the term and are proud to reject corruption, barbarism, and injustice. We believe that the religion of Muhammad has been taken over by an imposter version of Islam and that the Imams (as) preserved Muhammad’s original teachings as they were. So we have our own books (hadiths), our own jurisprudence, theology, interpretation of the Quran, and philosophy that is uniquely our own. The sunnis especially the Salafis consider us to be the worst type of unbelievers, worse than even the Christians and Jews. I hope that helps a little? 🙂

Online bullies are as brave as their keyboard!

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m glad you’re here, too. After 911 we saw plenty of cruel behavior towards Muslims, even towards non Muslims that uneducated people assumed were Muslims. So the Sunni site has no copyright on unseemly behavior.

Hi. Famdigy. That’s really astounding and deep rooted.

What is the population of your Faith?

No they don’t Margy, I can understand uneducated peoples frustration, maybe they don’t know better. But the scary part is there is no room for dialogue, or tolerance of differences, no effort or care or desire to understand the other’s views. I guess you can find that in every group but it’s a common thread among the salafis. As Muslims we have not been vocal against their ideology and that’s part of the problem. Historically Shias have been persecuted by the rules and so throughout the centuries we learned to be quite, to keep a low profile and not speak up so we can save our family and property. I’m seeing this shift. In today’s age of the internet, twitter, freedoms in the western world we can speak up without reprisal or fear. The culture of fear and silence is hard to overcome but given some time we’ll see more and more Muslims challenge the salafi status quo

Not sure as most muslim countries don’t keep accurate statistics. I’m guessing we’re 20% but that includes all of the other sub groups / sects within the Shia umbrella. The Twelvers are the largest group within that umbrella but I can’t say how big in numbers exactly.

quick questions, what would be the difference between you and Baihi? How with some of the violent verses in the Koran work with the peaceful ones? Would the original teaching be the peaceful not the violent? Was the Koran corrupted then?

Ah ok thanks.

Can I ask you why (if you don’t mind) is a picture of Jesus (similar to the one from the Hagia Sophia) is in your signature?

I don’t know much about Baha’ii. I know that the person who started the faith claimed to be the Mahdi which is our 12th Imam. When it comes to the Koran our view is that the content hasn’t changed textually. Same words, but we believe the interpretation of it has changed. Sunnis often time and especially the Salafis will take the verses of the Qur’an literally and that’s what they go by. The Imams taught us the Koran’s verses are not all the same, some have literal meanings, others are allegorical. In all cases we don’t interpret them outside of the context that’s provided to us by the Imams. So with some of the violent verses have to be taken in context with the non-violent ones and we can’t interpret one in isolation of the other. For example, the non-violent verses tell us not to fight those who do not fight us, and that making peace is prefered to making war. The violent verses read “find them wherever they are and kill them” I’m paraphrasing here sorry. But that’s not read in isolation, we don’t believe in abrogation in the same way the Sunnis do. Instead we interpret it to mean something like this. Try to make peace not war, but if war is forced on you and you have no other choice then fight, but dont be cowards in battle, fight instead with vigor and fearlessness… It’s convoluted I know I hope I explained somewhat.

Just wondering, is yours the sect of Shia that is professed by the Iranian government? Also, how many of the twelve imams have already come in your belief?

Well, Muhammad (pbuh&hf) compared Ali (as) to Jesus. I don’t remember the exact quote off hand but I guess the picture is in reference to that quote.

Interesting. Is this statement by Muhammed in the Quran or some other extent works?

Sorry to burden you with these flood of question. 😛
