Hello, I am new to this forum. i am a 28 year old girl and I have had times in my life where i am really spiritual, saying the rosary daily, mass, etc. UNfortunately i have had a boyfriend for four years who is pretty much agnostic. He doesnt believe or understand that your not supposed to have sexual activity until marriage. He also says it is part of us and our relationship and how he feels close to me. besides the fact that it feels good to him obviousally. but he is so manipulative and is threatening me saying im so unstable and horrible to do this to him. I keep deciding i want to have no sex and be holy and i go to confession and i m good for like a week. and then ig ive in. its happened like four times. he makes me feel so guilty and i also feel like ill never find a guy my age around here who is willing to not have sexual activity nless of course they were holy also. My point is, how do i deal with my bf threatening to leave me and go meet another girl since I try to be good and religious? It would kill me. i also feel like sometimes I mess up with sin. such as Ill end up getting to drunk or something. then i m like, “oh well just commited a mortal sin anyway, might as well give into him” does God look at all the times we try to be good? Its confusing. i just feel like i keep messing up why even try.

If he’s coercing you, that’s illegal and assault, first of all.

Drop him like a hot potato and get some counseling/spiritual direction for yourself.

Honey, a man who truly loves you won’t treat you badly. He won’t manipulate you and he’d encourage you to grow in holiness.

God commanded men to love their brides as Christ did the Church. Christ died for the Church, rather than see her go to the gates of Hell. Your beloved should do the same.

I think you know the answer. You just need courage to follow it.

I’ll be praying.

Sancta is right about this.

Get a boyfriend who respects and cares about you.

It’s hard, I understand and know how it is. No one should say it isn’t.

Praying for you

Sancta said it all.

Change your cell number so he cannot harass you any more!

The advice(s) to you so far have been right on. Drop him now. And not only find a guy who respects you, please, find a Catholic guy. 99% of the time, there are only long term problems if you date (and eventually marry) a non-Catholic man.

I will pray for you. -Joseph.

PS: and no itimacy of any kind with anyone until you marry -(that good Catholic man).

Seems like you have a good understanding of the situation.

God bless you in your struggles.

Like everyone else said get this guy out of your life ASAP. Men can only treat you the way you let them treat you and there is no rule saying you can only date men your age either if men your age are immature jerks either don’t date or date older men.

The way you deal with your bf threatening to leave you is that you leave him first.

God is better than this lowlife, choose God, God has given you everything good in your life.

What she said 👍👍

I am currently involved in a thread where a woman is needing to get away from a manupulative narcessitic husband. I’d hate to see you find yourself in the same situation in 10 years.
If this guy doesn’t know how to treat you like the lady you are, then you need to drop him.

That being said it does appear that your spiritual struggles are sending him mixed signals - so the problem is not entirely his. You need time to sort yourself out. Please discontinue the relationship and work on your spiritual journey until you are comfortable with yourself. Then you can seek out someone who is truly compatable if that is your desire.

Peace
James

I know that must be a difficult situation to be in 😦

to be honest, I think it would be best to find someone who shares your faith and values. Not only for the sake of your eternal salvation and your soul - which is very important - but also because it would be easier on you and you’ll be able to share that part of your life with someone.

however - If you really love your boyfriend and would want to spend your life with him, - make it very clear to him that you don’t want to have sex before marriage or sin, and if he has a problem with that and leaves then the relationship is not worth it anyway.

Remember God loves you infinitely more than anyone else ever can. Each time we choose sin over God, we’re exchanging His love for something that will never satisfy our hearts anyway. Try to understand God’s love for you in a deeper way and it will be easier.

You asked, why try… well if we don’t try we’ll never become holy. Importantly, if we don’t try we might - very probably - end up in hell. If you messed up, - remember God’s mercy, go to Confession, and come back to Him… but thinking “I’ll sin this one time cause God will forgive” - that is a sin also and i’ts called presumption.

I think if your relationship is drawing you away from God and causing you to sin, it doesnt sound like a relationship that’s best to pursue.

Just my 100% honest opinion 🙂

God bless

I also wanted to say - if he is coercing you into sex or making you feel guilty if you don’t have sex with him - that’s a form of abuse and I suggest to LEAVE now. This should be 100% your choice and you should have 100% freedom to say ‘no’ and not be harassed about it. It sounds like he doesn’t respect you and you deserve someone better!

Oh honey, it sounds like you are out growing this manipulative man-child and God is calling you back into relationship with Him.
Besides, if having sex was really so important to this is guy he would not be able to make you his wife fast enough. He clearly doesn’t love or respect you after 4 years of dating and using your body and not wanting you to be his wife. Don’t ignore that little voice inside of you that is telling you to be chaste and get away from this situation. Just go to confession and start over, God will never let Satn use this sin against you again…there is freedom in Christ!
Get some good books by Jason Evert or Christopher West to start your journey. I will say a prayer for you.

Remember who you are. You are a child of God. You are a daughter of the King. You are cherished by Our Lord. He bought and paid for you with His own blood. You are a sweet daughter of Mary. Your angel is in reverential awe every time you worthily receive Communion. You have the ability to delight our Lord when you are in union with Him.

God has lovingly prepared so many precious gifts especially for you, and this relationship is damaging you, hurting you, coercing you to do things you know are wrong, giving you regret and guilt, turning you into someone you don’t wish to be.

“how do i deal with my bf threatening to leave me and go meet another girl”…that gives me the shudders. That is not something any decent man would ever threaten. End it now.

Contch, I was in pretty much the exact same position a few years ago. I had an agnostic girlfriend who wanted us to have sex, and I didn’t want to. Now, we never went all the way, but much farther than we should have. She made me utterly miserable for the majority of our relationship, which was almost 4 years in duration. When I finally managed to break it off, I felt really awful for a while (especially when she started seeing, and fooling around with, someone else just a couple weeks later), but less than a year later I met the woman who is now my wife. She’s faithfully Catholic and everything! And I’m infinitely more happy than I would have been otherwise. No guilt, no pressure; I don’t feel like I have to sell myself out or hide who I want to be. In fact, that happened right after the first relationship ended.

I know all too well how much it can hurt to leave someone you care about, especially after several years, but for your own happiness and well-being (emotionally, mentally, spiritually), you need to break it off before things go even farther. I can assure you that it truly is for the best.

Please understands that your boyfriend is not a good man for you. Yourself, you say he is manipulative and threatening. Do you want to spend your life with a manipulative and threatening man? I think you don’t. Don’t be afraid that you won’t supposedly find a man who will as much as wait for sex until marriage. There are such men, well, I am one at 27 years, there are also others of all age categories, who do believe in and observe the abstinence from premarital sex. You may simply need to look at different places from where you usually do because in today’s secular society in a non-Catholic country, it may indeed be difficult to find an abstaining man in normal social circumstances (school, work etc.), but you can look at parish events with normal Catholic parishes (not ones that are “liberal” and think the Church is behind the times or “Rome” is too strict).

Moreover, there are men who are not manipulative or threatening. There is quite a number here in these forums, some of whom are great husbands and fathers and some are single men, some of whom have had poor luck dating (in some cases not in the least because they want to abstain from sex until marriage). This is a forum for discussion, rather than dating (although couples have met here), but there are Catholic dating sites, singles’ clubs, singles’ events and more–just ask around your parish (again, so long as it’s not a parish that thinks premarital sex is okay–unfortunately, there are such communities).

I don’t like giving such advice, but you need to break up with your boyfriend. He is dangerous to your soul (pushing you into premarital sex), your psychic constitution (he manipulates and threatens you into sex, which is abuse) and your general well-being. Concentrate on being in full communion with God and the Church and hold out for a man who will love you and respect you.

And your age is not a last call or anything like that. Yes, it’s time to look seriously for a husband if marriage is your calling, but it’s not time to despair. There is no such thing as time to despair anyway because despair separates us from God. God cares more for you than any man ever could and He won’t leave you alone in your struggles.

Why is it that whenever there is a thread about a women having problems with sexual sins it always follows with the blame of the man? Unless it is rape involved, which I doubt since there is no mention of the OP taking police action against her boyfriend, then a woman must take responsibility for her own chastity especially in a relationship with a non-believer. Non-believers have different morals than believers do. By giving in to sex, you actually show to him that religious people are hypocrites that preach one thing and do another when pleasure is at stake and by this you harden his heart to Christ even further. Remember, for many non-religious people sex is a sign of basic love in a relationship. It is something normal that you do if you love each other. So for an agnostic, turning down sex with him can be like rejecting him personally. This is because for many sex is not viewed with the same reverence as Christians revere it. To him, it feels like he is with a girl that he is attracted to but for some reason that he doesnt understand or comprehend she tries to say no to him…then eventually says yes. He probably thinks you are playing a game of hard to get and is playing along. A situation like this happens all to often yet people never seem to learn that there are many ways to get involved with a like-minded person. If you cannot find someone through the course of your life, many churches have single or young adult groups. If this fails, you have tons of dating websites that are centered around Christians finding love.

I have to say that women want equality yet they expect the man to do all the work in keeping the relationship chaste and take most of the blame. If woman want equality and respect from every man than they must stop settling for less and demand more. Just because some men are failing doesnt mean that women have to lower themselves to meet that level. Too many women complain about men and yet they almost always lower their standards to meet the lowest of the men. It seems like an exercise in futility. You complain about something you can control but are too weak to actually stand up for what you want. I think many of the feminists of the 19th and early 20th century would be horrified by women that lower their morality to meet the demands of men. They all fought for the superiority of women’s virtue over men. We have gone from Susan B. Anthony to Paris Hilton in this country. A woman can as Susan B. Anthony believed compete with men on their feminine basis but women are all too content with stooping down to their level and then complaining about how the man didnt change. Well, people do not always change and it does not help anyone get to heaven when we lower our standards because we are too weak to imagine life without regular sex.

I know many men who are much better men than I am that are single just like myself. I think with the amount women complain about finding a good man it is a travesty that some of my friends and family are still single. Many of them have been treated horribly when they have been in a relationship. My brother had a girl that he dated for a short time that got mad at men that held doors open for her. Other women that my friends and family try to get involved with have such emotional problems from past relationships that they cannot handle a normal relationship with a man that treats them well since it seems abnormal to them. Still others cheat on my friends sexually with other men. The common complaint from them is good women are hard to find. Yet I do not see them lowering standards or doing things sexually to gain love like women do. Yes, it is hard for men including myself to find good women but we do not need to have a relationship. This need for a relationship that many women have creates many of their desperate actions to find a man. If only the good women could actually follow through with what they say they want and not accept less I think we would see less of these all too common threads on here and we would all have less problems with temptation and falling into sin.

She said he’s been manipulating, coercing, and disrespecting her. She also said she takes responsibility for her own part. But still…If he’s treating her like that, then yeah, he’s responsible. No, she shouldn’t give in but if he’s her BOYFRIEND, he shouldn’t be BULLYING her. He shouldn’t be doing that anyway.

Besides, many acts of assault go unreported. You’d be shocked.

And if you look at history, it was the WOMAN who took full responsibility for chastity. Men were just “being men”, women still get slandered for either being the “prude” or for being on the extreme.

Why is it that whenever there is a thread about a women having problems with sexual sins it always follows with the blame of the man?
Because man is head of the woman, comes with the territory, so stop whining, its not attractive and could be a big contributor to why you are single.

If he is pushing you for sex and hinting or even directly threaten to leave you for another girl, he is not a keeper!

Any guy that does that cares for the sex more than for you. He may still see you as a person, but obviously not more valuable then sex is to him if he may leave for another girl that would put out.

This is just the plain and simple natural perspective, without even taking into account your relationship with the Lord.

In terms of the supernatural reality, if you are being coerced by him and afraid of losing him, that is the devil’s game. The enemy twist your emotions to make the boyfriend look good enough to keep even though he values your sex more than your person and your soul.

An example to give you perspective. Let’s imagine you are a poor girl that has a big entitlement that blooms (becomes active) once you get married. And you feel that you need to wait on marriage because you want to learn more about him and have work and school goals. But this whole time since before you two started getting serious he already knows about your entitlement. And after some time he learns about how much it is and starts pushing you harder and harder to get married–saying things like, “oh if we get married you’ll have all the money you need to get that good education.” Well, good Catholics get married for life, but he is not a Catholic. He could just marry you and take your money. In this example it’s clear that if he is pushing you even more after learning how much is in your entitlement; you better stop and smell the roses! Well, replace the entitlement with your sexuality and marriage with getting into bed.
