I was browsing around on a Q&A site and a person was asking if they could be baptized Catholic is they had a boyfriend. I thought the answer was yes but most of the people responding said that you couldn’t have a boyfriend if you’re Catholic and now I’m really confused!!
Is there some rule about dating that I’ve somehow missed??

From my knowledge, your a baptized Catholic if you where baptized by a priest. Period, end of discussion. Nothing can change that.

I’m a guy~and I’ve had many girlfriends in my life. Nothing has changed the fact that I am still a baptized Catholic. Same if I was a girl-if I had boyfriends, nothing would change.

If your homosexual, I’m simply not sure. I think if you are chaste, as if your signifigant other, I’m not sure it’s sinful to just have a signifigant other. I don’t know.

However, even if your homosexual, nothing can change your baptism status.

My wording was off. I meant that is it considered wrong for a Catholic to have a boyfriend? If you’re not Catholic, but want to be, do you have to end your relationship with your boyfriend?

Okay, thank you. That’s what i thought but the people I saw on the other site seemed pretty sure that Catholics couldn’t have boyfriends/girlfriends!

Some people try to be more Catholic than the pope…😛

Could it be Live in Boy Friends? Or Live in Girl Friends?

In that case there is probably mortal sin being conducted on a regular basis. If that is the case, then I’m sure the Church would require the person seeking baptism to repent of their sin, and move out of the “Live in” situation prior to baptism.

what kind of site? was it Catholic? was the response from a Catholic source, or just a bunch of opinions?

Yes of course you can have friends of either sex and still be Catholic, and yes you can socialize with them. No you cannot be sexually active with anyone outside of marriage, nor with anyone of your own gender at any time whatever. What exactly is your question?

The following comment is a little off-topic, but I’m not terribly sure if having a live-in partner is a sin in itself. There might be some situations in which a live-in partner is acceptable - e.g. when the partner’s parents are abusive to the point where he/she must move out, and you’re the only person he/she can stay with…and living alone isn’t a viable option. I think I read somewhere that it is not living with a partner that is sinful but rather what a live-in situation could lead to. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It would be a serious sin to live with someone if you know the societal assumption is going to be that you’re enjoying marital relations without the benefit of marriage, even if you are not actually doing so. It is not simply up to other people to mind their own business, although certainly they should be doing that, too! You have a moral responsibility to not give scandal, even though others also have a responsibility not to fall into rash judgement.

Having said that, yes, you may have to accept the possibility that you could give scandal, if that is your only option other than living in an objectively dangerous situation, like with an abuser or out on the street. You do have the responsibility to continue to look for a less scandalous arrangement, though.

The priest you go to for baptism has to be the judge of whether you are ready to renounce a life of sin. That isn’t someone else’s call, and he does not have to wait until you’re morally perfect before your baptism.

Another possibility in the boyfriend/girlfriend question is regarding divorced people whose first marriages have not been declared null. They are still married in God’s eyes, though civilly divorced, and may not date.

Right. IOW, people do not have to renounce their girlfriends or boyfriends in order to be baptised a Catholic. They don’t have to be saints. They do have to renounce sin.

The reason is that “to those to whom much is given, much is expected.” If you wallow in serious sin and will not leave it, baptism might only raise your culpability. That’s no help.

No kidding O.o

It was a site that had different sections for different things. I was on the Catholic section and the people responding said they were Catholic.
