BP Oil Spill Crisis...Sign of the times?

I do not believe this to be a sign of the end times. If it is, then so be it. But I will believe in the signs of the end times when our Lord, Jesus Christ, returns. Until that day I refuse to get caught up in guessing at when the world is ending. It is not for us to know.

As for the oil in Alaska, I’m assuming you’re referring to ANWR? Geological studies have shown that it does not contain enough to help with our current situation. By the time we are able to get to it and to refine it, costs will rise by more than it would save us at the pump simply due to inflation.

Add to that the fact that the oil we do get from Alasks is shale oil, and thus more difficult and expensive to refine, and you begin to see why we would rather use oil from other sources.

The only part about it that bothers me is that we export almost 40 percent of the oil we do produce here in the United States. Anybody see a problem with that?

It’s a sign of incompetence - nothing more. The military has offered to help but the government is letting BP alone. Too bad. We – the average poster here – can do nothing about the situation.

Personally, I say bring in military equipment and do it now. They have deep-water capability.

The information I have may have changed. It’s at least five years old and I was doing it entirely from memory of freshman year of college. If you’ve got the modern data then go ahead and post it. I won’t argue with it.

But like we’ve been saying… statistics can always be misleading. That’s why I put that joke in there (sorry if it didn’t come across as such) about 90 percent of statistics being made up.

The oil companies didn’t WANT to drill that far from shore and in water a mile deep.

However, lawsuits by the Sierra Club and other environmental groups forced the oil companies out of the shallow water and into deep water.

No matter which side was responsible, the point that we humans have failed and we need GOD to be in our side, because as of May 31st “Oil spill goes from bad to worst”.

BP is actually using similar technology to try to seal one of the leaks at the moment- the administration has admitted that this won’t work without BP. The military couldn’t do much.

Thirty-five days ago one of BP’s oil refineries exploded of shore at sea. It was a massive explosion (a burning column of fire at sea) that killed 15 workers. For 35 days, oil at approx. 3million gallons per day has been hemorrhaging into the golf of mexico. For 35 days, the oil spill has been growing, surfacing and spreading towards land, with no end to the hemorrhaging in sight.

Since the spill began marine life has been dying: dolphins have been washed to shore dead, tainted brown, Pelicans coated with oil are pictured shivering until dead after diving into the water for food (as the oil counteracts their insulation), crabs - during this their mating season - are washing up to shore dead, and many more sea life dying each day. The oil is quickly finding its way into the streams and rivers of the gulf. Soon the oil will hit the warm current of the gulf and travel north through the atlantic to the eastern shores.

Tonight, I just watched a TV news correspondant say, "It looks like the red sea!" So I performed a Google (image) search of “BP oil spill” pics and - true enough - the oil as contrasted with the blue sea water looks red like blood.

Is this a coincidence? Sign of the times? What do you think?

There was an oil spill in 1979 (Ixtoc Oil Spill) in the Gulf of Mexico, which took 10 months to fix. Granted, that one was only 120 feet below water, but also didn’t have as much technology as we do today.

You are referring to the Hughes Glomar Explorer, which is a little obsolete by now ~ 1975 ]. In any event, it reportedly is working in Indonesia under lease to Marathon oil and has been modified for tasks other than lifting Soviet submarines from the ocean floor.

It would take a while to move it and modify it to do whatever you would want it to do.

If the faithful believe they have any real intellegence [wisdom] in comparison to God, such is a true insult. There’s a difference between a prediction and a sign, for instance:

Roads have signs to make the driver aware of things down the road. Road signs don’t predict anything, but mere communicating events about to occur on the driver’s road. As such, God does give signs…he has since the beginning, and not for prediction but to communicate events about to occur to the people traveling down this road.

IFF this oil spill does matched the passage I gave, it doesn’t “predict” anything but merely communicates to the faithful that we’re further “down the road” [hence the name of the thread, “sign of the times”], such as “oh look honey! We just pasted the ‘quarter-mile’ mark until we reach the next [holy] city”.

It sounds to me as if you would like to stop driving down the road, as your comment only serves to display YOUR fear in such things occuring…but God has not given his children a spirit of fear.

The “intelligent” thing to do would’ve been to ignore this thread if you consider it “blather”.

And by the way - ALL will know when Christ returns, or do you plan to keep your head in buried in the sand during the Second Advent?

You are the one harassing. You can’t seem to accept the fact that the oil spill is most definitely NOT a sign of the apocalypse. Sorry to burst your fear-mongering bubble. I am not fearful of Christ’s return. I welcome it. I just choose to look at His return in a rational manner, that is, I refrain from looking for signs of the end times under every rock. When it happens, it happens. I do not need signs as portents of doom.

I contend that this is not a sign. It is a disaster that gets those obsessed with the end times to fly into a frenzy. The Revelation of St. John is more than about the end times. It is also about the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 and it is a picture of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

First: Pet peeve of mine-the book is “Revelation”, as in singular. If you are going to discuss this intelligently, then first get the name of the book correct.

Second: Going off half-cocked through your own private interpretation is not the way to delve into the Scriptures. Linking the oil spill to wormwood is irresponsible and inane. First of all, it does not match the sign–1/3 of the worlds water and 1/3 of the life in the sea. Gulf of Mexico isn’t even close. And if you can point out how any of this ridiculously flawed interpretation is consistent with the Living Tradition of the Church, I would be grateful. Until you address these points, I will write you off as just another would-be doomsayer.
