Bishop Athansius Schneider of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, who wrote a compelling argument for the return of Communion while kneeling and on the tongue, will hold two talks next Sunday - July 27th - at Assumption Grotto. He is preaching at this morning’s 9:30am TLM Mass and will celebrate the Noon Mass.
Bp Schneider holds a PhD in patristics and uses his knowledge to examine the historical-liturgical aspects of the Rite of the Eucharist in his book Dominus Est. In that book, he touches on the subject of how we receive Holy Communion. it was first published by the Vatican’s own library not long ago and is being translated into english now.
COMMUNION IN THE HAND IN THE EARLY CHURCH
I have heard the bishop explain once that when the people in the early Church received Communion in the hand, it was not at all like the way it is done today. For example, following Communion, those receiving had to have their hands purified, much like the sacred vessels. If I recall, not everyone could receive on the hand (I think it was for males only). I am hoping to talk with him on this next week.

I understand this is a hot-button issue and one thing I have noticed about the Bishop’s style is that it is more like Pope Benedict. He is not forcing anyone to accept what he is presenting, but merely asking people to consider thehistorical-liturgical aspects of it all.
I would suggest that it will be difficult for people to challenge his position without knowing what he is presenting, I hope people will be open to getting the book, which is now 2/3 translated, and see if the common objections have been adequately addressed.
