Brazilian Catholic Church

The Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church is not in communion with Rome. They broke away in 1945, although they maintain valid apostolic succession. Of course, the majority of Brazilians are normal Roman Catholics.

I didn’t know that. Then why did Pope Benedict XVI made an official visit to Brazil before his resignation (even saying Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida) and why is Pope Francis coming to the World Youth Day event in Rio?

Confusing…
Is this another one of those churches “Brazilian Catholic Church” not in communion w/ Rome not to be confused w/ the “Catholic Church” in Brazil which is in communion w/ Rome?

Most Brazilians are Roman Catholics.

Some Brazilians belong to an organization named “Brazilian Catholic Church.”

Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida is a Roman Catholic basilica.

Bottom line: Any church can put “Catholic” or “Brazilian” in its name.

No, you’re not getting it. The catholic church in Brazil is in union with Rome. No issues beyond the ordinary human squabbles here and there.

There is a different entity that calls itself “The Brazilian Catholic Church” that is in schism with catholicism.

As I understand it (disclaimer: I’m an amatuer!), it’s somewhat akin to the way certain fundametalist LDS sects have broken away from your leadership in Salt Lake city and consider themselves the truly faithful latter day saints, while the Salt Lake guys have compromised with the world…

We have something similar here in the USA called the “Polish National Catholic Church” which is an ever more hilarious misnomer since they’ve committed schism with catholicism AND have nothing to do with the Nation of Poland. 🙂

These independent organizations that usurp the name “catholic” really do civilizational clarity a disservice! If you’re going to invent your own religion, at least be honest and give it a new name!

Yes.

123 million Brazilians are Roman Catholics.

1.3 million Brazilians are members of the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church.

Oh, yes, I’ve heard about that church. There’s also the Liberal Catholic Church and the Charismatic Apostolic Catholic Church.
