Are bread AND wine absolutely necessary for the sacrifice of the Eucharist? I attend a catholic church that only offers bread during the Eucharist, but it seems like there should be both the body and blood present in bread AND wine. Am I worrying for no reason?
 
Yes, you are worrying for no reason. The only person who must consume both the Body and the Blood of Christ is the priest.

When we receive under one species only we receive both the Body and the Blood. The elements (bread and wine) are consecrated seperately. This shows the seperation of body and blood.

For hundreds of years, the laity never received the Blood of Christ - there is much more likelihood of accidents while receiving from the Chalice. Besides, it is necessary to be very careful with the quantity of wine that is to be consecrated, since the Blood cannot be placed in the Tabernacle, as can extra Hosts.

It is only in the years since Vatican II that the laity have been allowed to receive from the Chalice, and, even then, not always. More recently, it is permitted to do this more frequently, but still not when the size of the congregation would make it difficult to determine the correct volume to consecrate, and also, when the number of people to receive would make it difficult to manage appropriately.

Fear not - you receive the whole of Jesus when you receive only the Host.

The priest must receive under both forms, the laity are not required to do so. Christs Body is not only under the form of bread and His Blood under the form of wine.

When receiving under ONE form you receive Christ whole and complete, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

it is absolutely necessary that the priest consecrate both bread and wine and consume both the Body and Blood of the Lord, but it is not and never has been a requirement that both species be offered to the faithful.
 
The Tridentine Masses that I have attended only give the hosts. I have not been to other masses. Years ago I went to an Episcopal service and the people were given both. They had everyone drink out of the same chalice which was rotated for each person and then a cloth was used to wipe the edge of the chalice after 6 people or so. I thought it was so gross. :bigyikes:

Well, it is grace that occurs, and to think of it as gross may not be the right approach. It is the rennovation of the clean that occurs during communion.

As Jesus says when they criticize the apostles not using their hands “It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles, but that which leaves the mouth. For that which enters the mouth leaves the body…” I don´t know the rest.

I would not be as freaked out at a Catholic serivce. But I might not choose to partake under those conditions. :hmmm:

Thank you, everyone, for your helpful and thoughtful replies! Yes, the Priest does consecrate both the bread and the wine. I just was curious as to whether I actually needed to receive both the bread and the wine in order to have body and blood of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ dwelling within me. Thank you again for your help!
