For my last confession, I was asked to give up something I liked to eat for a day. I chose to give up sweets/chocolates/candies. However I was feeling sick (flu) and decided to take a sweet orange flavored vitamin. Now…I don’t know if I am over thinking this or not, but I’m wondering if this counts as breaking my fast from sweets.

I must note that I didn’t have to take the vitamin (I mean, it wouldn’t be seriously sick if I didn’t), and I thought about it, but decided to have it anyways.

I’m thinking about doing the fast all over again when I get better, but I’m wondering if this is a mortal sin.

Thanks for your help. God Bless.

Scrupulosity at work here. No, you didn’t do anything sinful.

Even if you HAD eaten an actual sweet, it would **not **have been a mortal sin.

Agree.

If you feel the need, repeat the penance. It’s not like there’s a constrained time to do a penance, so just count it still undone and go through it again.

Feel better soon!

you could have brushed your teeth before taking the candy and it would have tasted awful, problem solved

It`s not a mortal sin and yes: i do advice you to do the fasting over again once you feel better.
I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks everyone. I feel a bit silly, but I do have OCD and tend to over think these things. I appreciate your help. 🙂

you were not required to fast at all, it was just a short trial, one day, as part of our penance

medicine never breaks a fast in any case even on fast days imposed by the Church
ergo you did not sin

one cannot, except with permission of the pastor, confessor, spiritual director or bishop make a vow or promise that is binding under penalty of mortal sin.

ergo you did not sin in any way shape or form

an extreme fast (beyond the traditional disciplines of the Church) should not be undertaken in any case without permission from authority listed above.

if you have a problem with anxiety over questions such as this you may be grappling with scrupulosity, a spiritual trial that should be taken to your one regular confessor or spiritual director for guidance.

btw a vitamin probably won’t help with flu or colds, but a medication or supplement is not a candy, even if it is sweetened to cover the taste of the ingredients.

Thanks for your response. Its not really relevant, but it had vitamin C in it, which my doctor told me to take. :shrug:Lol.
