Basically ending the abstinence, for example, say someone promised not to snack on junk food but then had a big bowl of ice cream. Or someone ate meat on Friday.

The first example is not really a sin. It’s a failure, but not a sin, since the Church does not obligate us to pick something to deny ourselves (though Lent is about self-denial). The second is a law of the Church, but again, it isn’t an entirely simple question. Did the person forget it was Friday? Then it isn’t a sin. Did they say, “Hang it all, I wanna hot dog and I’m gonna eat one!”? This would be a sin, a sin of disobedience against the legitimate authority of the Church.

Of course, we all sin. The remedy for a “lent breaker” is the same as for “lent keepers”: confession to one of Christ’s priests. I heard a monk say that Mercy was God’s favorite miracle, so as to what happens if one breaks Lent, well, I’d say the Holy One is waiting to forgive him.

Thank You. God Bless You! 🙂
