Breaking News (CNS): The Life Teen Mass has been reformed

“Two of the most noticeable changes with the Life Teen Mass are the cessation of a period during the Mass when teens would normally enter the sanctuary and gather around the altar during the eucharistic prayer. Life Teen also is asking its participating parishes to stop the practice of saying, “The Mass never ends. It must be lived,” at the conclusion of the liturgy.”

What does everyone think? My opinion is that this is an important change and takes away my two biggest reservations about the Life Teen Mass (although not all of them).

The teens up at the altar thing is the one aspect of LifeTeen that I dislike. It’s corny and disruptive. Glad to see it go. I’ll be interested if the pastor at the Cathedral where I occasionally attend one follows this directive. He seems to enjoy it so much.
 
Don’t look for changes to take effect until October.

Then if they don’t - report it to the Bishop.
 
Glad to hear the news. I had to attend a LifeTeen this summer. I think holding Mass in an interstate median would have been less distracting (and quieter). Still, I hope this movement can continue in a form faithful to the church because of all the good that is done for the young people. God bless all of you in LifeTeen.
 
would that all other “lay associations of the faithful” were as prompt, obedient, and joyful about complying with Church directives. Did you notice the key to implementation: they are distributing a video to instruct all those involved on the changes, and the need for them. That’s a concept, instead of just springing the changes on the unsuspecting congregation one fine day.
 
I like the idea of Life Teen…but why on earth would the Church ever want to change the Mass just to make the kids happy? The last place the kids need to be during Eucharistic Prayer is on the Alter, then need to be on their knees. If they cant fathom the fact that Heaven is on Earth during Mass and that they need to be reverent, quiet and in awe of the presence of Christ, then maybe they shouldnt be at Mass.

I mean, I always thought the Church was suppose to change society, not society changing the Church.
 
i think the life teen mass is a fantastic thing, and has brought life and energy to parishes where it’s been implemented.

i was uncomfortable with the ‘mass never ends’ bit, though, and am glad to see it changed.

what do you folks feel about the upbeat music? that’s my fav part, but don’t let me influence your remarks. 🙂
 
I had to attend our LT Mass this Sunday, and from what I’d read on this site, I was dreading it. But happily, it was a normal Mass, with a good mix of teens and adults, nothing weird or “off,” and the only thing making it different from a normal Mass was teens were serving as ushers.
 
Thank you so much for this info - we ,sadly, have a Priest who thinks that he can incoporate much of Lifeteen into his regular Sunday Masses. Sadly he is also the Diocesan Youth Chaplain and into the bargain he thinks he can alter the Words as he wishes during the Consecration. I’m tired of being told that “while they were at supper … he took bread … and gave it to his FRIENDS …”
or again " and gave it to his APOSTLES … " and of course " Go , the Mass never ends …"

Maybe , now we can get back to Mass as the Rubrics specify.

Why have we not taken this to our Pastor - well he did not appear last week when the Assistant was celebrating this travesty of a Mass - and it needs a few more of us who are willing to stand up and be counted.
 
Bishop Olmsted has been Bishop of this Diocese for less than a year and has made remarkable positive changes, this being one of them.

Our former Bishop, as some may remember, was convicted of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and was asked to resign.

Mnsg. Dale, the founder of life teen mentioned in the article, was also the former bishop’s Vicar General. A position he no longer holds. However I am sure he wishes to be obedient to the new Bishop and has not only complied but has issued the directive to Life Teen Mass communities everwhere (I think the life teen Mass has some sort of a patent or something and one has to buy the materials to call it a Life Teen Mass) .

Anyway if you notice after October (the time frame given) that these two mentioned abuses still occur, please write to your local Bishop
 
I’m glad that these changes are taking place. More people will be open to the LT Mass, which means we reach more youth, which eventually means that more youth are helped into a fuller and vibrant faith. All of which is a good thing. 🙂

I’m a youth minister volunteer (“Core Member” in LT terminology) for a LT Parish. We have found that a mass with externals that are geared towards teenagers has helped contribute to more youth coming to mass, more vocations, etc.

For those of you who do not know what a LifeTeen Mass is: It’s essentially a mass geared towards teenagers. We invite teens to participate using whatever gifts God has given them as greeters, ushers, readers, altar servers, etc. Our Parish priest goes a bit deeper and explains bits of the mass that are not quite intuitive, either in the Homily, before mass, or as they occur (ie: at the Gospel when we cross our forehead, lips, and heart - a teen who is new to the mass would be completely baffled as to what is going on). We also make Music a high priority. We try and facilitate music that inspires and brings one’s mind closer to God in the same sense that Saint Augustine wrote in *Confessions: “*How I wept, deeply moved by your hymns, songs, and the voices that echoed through your Church! What emotion I experienced in them! Those sounds flowed into my ears distilling the truth in my heart. A feeling of devotion surged within me, and tears streamed down my face - tears that did me good.” We have found that contemporary Christian music can bring about these emotions.

So, that’s the jist. I’m glad these changes are taking place.
 
Ok, my opinion…I don’t like the fact of “going up around the alter” the GIRM states that the Eucharistic Prayer should be in silence and reverence. I don’t see reverence in going up around the alter and swaying, when the focus should be on Jesus. Going up around the alter and swaying is more focused on comfort, and people not Jesus.

Just my opinion.
