There wouldn’t be two Popes, but nonetheless Benedict would be a distraction if he were to hold any office in the Vatican in the reign of his successor.
Betcha he’ll move back to Germany.

Though I doubt he could live in that small house he owns with his brother; it’s not big enough security-wise.

I’m shocked. I don’t know if anyone saw this coming, did they?🤷

I did my Baccalaureate Thesis on Conclaves and I don’t even know how to factor in a Papal Resignation into the timeline. Theoretically the Conclave could begin 1 March if the Pope decides.

Can they even get this all together in a matter of two weeks?
Funny, even though it is such a short time since JP2’s death, I cannot for the life of me remember how long it was before the conclave started in '05.

Has he previously identified who he thought had the proper formation to be a pope one day ? Didn’t JP2 subtly indicate his choice was Benedict ?

17 Days between John Paul II’s death and Benedict’s election, between 2 April and 19 April.

I guess it explains the mini-Consistory and why he wanted to keep the College full.

Supposedly, Cardinal Scola.

But I think Scola’s candidacy is dead now. Nothing against the guy. It’s just he was dragged down with that Vatileaks scandal. He had nothing to do with it but there was an alleged plot to assassinate Benedict and somehow install Scola. If Scola were elected, to many people it would imply the plot really happened.

(I’m not saying it’s real; just saying that’s how a lot of people will think.)

I always believe that Peter, knowing he was to die …communicated to those in Rome who he wished to carry the Cross for our Church in visible way.
But he (Peter) never run away from suffering, from death, since his assuming of his office, of which with trust and support from Himself, the Lord granted him!!!

EVERY CATHOLIC IS WORTHY A SHOCK!

I am so sorry that the Pope felt that this was necessary, but I can understand his reasoning. I have the utmost respect for this amazing man. His wisdom, kindness, and intelligence shines forth from him. (And he loves cats. 🙂 )

Yes, but the laity can have an influence …who would we like to see nominated in the first ballot ?
The last thing we should want to do is have an influence. This is not a Presidential ballot, nor is the Church a democracy. This is about who God wants, not who we would like.

Well, looks like we have more than enough time then.

Does anyone have a transcript of Father Lombardi’s press conference earlier?

CNN covered like a minute of it.

A conclave to elect a pope usually must begin within two weeks of the Pope’s death , so yes they have time to get it all together and it conceivably begin right away time wise, but this is a new situation but I would think they would start the conclave immediately… I suppose the cardinals would gather for his retirement and then begin the conclave. They don’t want the See vacant for long.

Speaking of which, I wonder how the retirement will go. A Mass? A ceremony of some sort?

It’s hard to envision this happening with the Pope sitting at home when the clock strikes 8.

And I doubt Cardinals know how to throw a good retirement party!

I actually wonder if certain provisions about retiring or otherwise leaving bishops wouldn’t apply to him, but I can’t really imagine Rome with an Apostolic Administrator.

I guess that’s the job of the Camerlengo, currently Cardinal Bertone.

Does anyone know who the Senior-most Cardinal Bishop is?

I’m wondering who’s going to be presiding. Sodano is too old and so is Etchegaray.
